GM makes transmissions that go in everything, including some BMWs.

Default Who makes the best transmission???

I've driven roughly 275000 miles since I first got my license. The only vehicles I ever had transmission trouble with were a 99 Toyota Camry w/ 90K miles (lost reverse and second, had to be replaced) and a 93 Olds Silhouette w/ 110k miles (when cold, you had to shift all the way down to L1 and then back up to get into reverse. minor issue, never bothered fixing it).

90% of those 275k miles were behind the wheel of GM FWD cars. Can't say I disliked the way they shifted (unlike the Honda's I've owned), always held up to my abuse, rarely maintained them.

I know for sure that Ford/Mercury makes some of the WORST ones. My gf's 97 sable had the trans go (and I mean blew apart internally to the point it could not be rebuilt properly) at 80k miles.

One car is definately representative of all Ford/Mercury models.

The auto transmissions used in Sables and Taurus' in the late 90's have been known to have many problems and break prematurely. Ford changed the transmission in the early part of the 00's since they knew they cheaped out on the transmission.

Same with the Aerostar / Windstar. They put the Taurus transmission in the vans, thus having a car transmission on a heavier vehicle. They were notorious for their problems.

I've never driven a smoother shifting auto tranny until I got my lexus. It feels like I'm driving in 1 gear only.

That is exactly what is going to send it to an early death, smooth shifting is accomplished through excessive clutch slippage, thus shortening the traniies life.

if you consider it an auto, the DSG from audi is freaking sweet. quicker than a manual, smooth as an auto, best of both worlds.

Just caught this and had to jump in here... I'm sorry, but are you kidding me? By far, Honda makes the best automatics. They've been considered the best for years; almost ever single review of a Honda automobile mentions their transmissions bein the best in the business.

As for GM makin the transmissions that go in everything, I think you mean Delphi, which is bankrupt and dragging GM down with it. I've never heard of any company burning to the ground, while making best products on the market. If that was the case, then GM and Delphi wouldn't be in the positions they are today. You may also note that Delphi now makes many of the components inside the lastest MB's, which are now widely considered some of the most unreliable vehicles on the road.

True, but Ferrari seems stuck on Stage 3 garbage, at least in my experience. Driving a 360 was a horrendous experience. Very fun, but horrendous at the same time.

Now the Aston Martin Vanquish... THAT is a tranny that moves me to tears of joy. Stage 4 there... super fast shifts that automatically do the rev-matching for you if you're driving in sport mode. Doesn't even matter what the gas pedal is doing. You never get that hard lurch when the lower gear engages. The tranny automatically rev-matches while engaging the next gear (up or down) so every shift is butter-smooth. The only downside is, the absence of that annoying lurch actually seems to reduce the feel of speed a little. So while you might go from 0-150 in 20 seconds like the salesman did during the demo ride, it somehow felt "slower" without noticing the manual shift points. Hard to explain I guess.

In short... that's my vote for best tranny. It's not a traditional automatic transmission but it aint a manual either... I don't know wtf it is, really.

hes a blind fanboi, and his post is hilarious.

GM's auto trannies were used in previous Rolls Royce's, BMW's, all of GM, and many other manufs. they are bullet proof, and down right solid.
