Default AC making popping noise

My window unit in my dorm room is making a funny popping/crackling noise and I can't figure out what it is. When it's just on fan it's fine, but when the actual AC kicks on it pops and crackles for a few minutes or longer depending on how cold the air is. It also gets a big chunk of ice on it even when it's on a low setting. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this problem? We can't regulate the heater in our room, it's either on or off, so the AC is the only way to get it a decent temp. I'm not real electrical savvy so to me this isn't a stupid question. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you can't regulate the heat in the room? If it's typical college heating, there should be a control on the bottom of the baseboard heater. It's going to be on one of the pipes. You can turn it to control how much heat you actually want cranked into the room.

Nope, heat is either on or off...this is a REALLY old dorm. I just cleaned the air filter this morning. Now every time the AC kicks on (as opposed to fan) the cooling unit starts to get a layer of frost and then ice on it...what can I do to stop it?

I can't remove the AC unit, it's bolted in. The temp is set at "4".

Bevis, if you read the rest of the thread you would know that I can't adjust my heat, it's either on or off, so the AC is the best method of temp regulation.

If it's too cold outside that can cause the coils to freeze, as there's not enough of a temperature difference. I'm guessing the noise and the chunks of ice are from that.

It's not all of Mizzou's heating, just this dorm...it's the oldest and crappiest dorm on campus...it's being torn down/remodeled in a year or two. I turned it on fan only in hopes of cooling things down. Once it gets to the right temp all we have to do is leave the heat off and only sometimes run the fan on the AC, but until that point AC has to stay on.
