Default Nissan vs Toyota (small to mid 4x4 pick ups) I need a truck

It looks like i am going to need a pick up truck
as for the year,if i can find a mid/late 90's with ultra low miles and super clean ill go that far back..but those are hard to come by.
extd cab preferred, im looking in the 10 to 15000k range.

*what would be my best choice?

*years to stay away from?

*engines to avoid?

**MY needs for a truck***
Bring trash to the dump
the odd peice of lumber/home depot items
haul around a bass boat(not like a skeeter or a ranger..a small basstender style one)
commute to work and back...unless i buy a beater.

PS: id like a bed thats a whole bed preferably(no wheel wells)...but that isnt a deal breaker.

...ill likely have this vehicle for the next 5 years/

I am still really happy with the Dakota. I'm not sure what your requirements are for hauling/towing/seating but the Dakota is the most capable of the smaller trucks. I'd go with the 4.7 liter V8 if try one.

id like something i can place a bass boat(personal) in the bed, i dont really want to register a trailer.4x8 sheets of plywoods and misc for home type things, and rubbish for the dump...nothing heavy duty..the bass boats weigh 200lbs max.

im wondering if i should just buy a beater?:/

IIRC, the late 90's Dakota is the only "Compact" truck that lets you lay a sheet of plywood flat in the bed.

You can get a '00 Dakota with the V8 and 4WD and under 50k miles for around $13k or so. It's a pretty good value compared to a Toyota.

The Nissan and Tacomas were pretty small in bed dimensions compared to the Dakota. The Nissan in particular had a very narrow bed.

If you are just looking for a beater though at the lowest price possible, I'd look for as clean and low milage Ranger w/ the 4.0L V6 that I could find. They are dirt cheap and can take a beating. Decent power. Decent fuel economy. Decent sized bed. And I would rate them quite reliable and parts for them are dime a dozen. Only downsize is that they lack some fit and finish and refinement that a Tacoma might have.

Yeah for the money and yrs your looking at a Dakota is hard to beat just cause its bigger than the rest. You won't need the V8 either cause your not towing anything. I've seen Dakotas with the V8 hauling 5th wheels around.
If it was a brand new truck the Toyota with the long bed. For better off-roading the Nissan Truck.
