Default Is a black light bad for health?

I just bought a black light for my apartment, but I was wondering if it can be bad for health (as in cancer or eye troubles) or bad for plants and furniture (decoloration, premature aging). Anybody has a clue on this?

Actually at least some of them are UV lightbulbs and yes they can in theory give you cancer. It's one thing to use it for a party. I would never use it as a main light source.

Edit: It is UV, but at least one web site I just saw claims its not very harmful. I wouldn't risk it personally.

i don't think dark purple light means UV light. UV is ultra violet light. but i think a dark light IS a UV light.

Yes, it can possibly damage your eyes. There are two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. Some blacklights are the one that causes retina damage. I wouldn't use ANY blacklight just to be safe.

Why do you want your apartment looking like a laser tag arena/crappy bowling alley anyway?

totally wrong. you're trying to feed BS. it's an ultraviolet light. not a "purple bulb"

UV is bad for your eyes. You know it's UV because white color objects(full of phospher) glow when it UV and thats exactly what black lights do. There is "purple" light coming from the black lights but the thing that makes white color object glow is the UV.

the novelty type of black light, also called "black light blue" is relatively harmless, as the output isn't very high. Still not a good idea to stare directly at the light. A "true" black light can be dangerous as there is much less if any visible light leakage, and the intensities are usually much greater (used for theatre and such).

"premature aging"

wtf?!

Unless you can bend time, you're always gonna be X years old from your birth. no amount of UV will turn you from a XX y/o to a XX+3y/o

Of course black lights are bad for your health. That's what killed Uncle Fester.
