Will anything bad happen if I don't file my local taxes?

I filed my federal back in january, and my state in march. I never got a form for my local, so i'm debating whether to file it or not.

I don't owe any money...

What exactly are local taxes?

By no means do I claim to be a tax expert, but the only taxes I have ever heard of are Federal, State, and Estimated. And I worked for TurboTax for many years.

if you don't owe them anything, then I probably won't worry about it. Maybe come back to you in three years and ask for the paper work; but other than that, its not a big deal.

If you owed; then I would say your only hurting yourself by not filing it.

Nope, local, as in the township.

nope never heard of them. man that would suck have to fill out Fed, STate and Local tax?

do you have sales tax? property tax? etc?

Yeah, it's pretty annoying. Usually I get forms mailed to me for all 3, but this year I never got a form for local, and i'm way too lazy to go down to the municiple building and ask for one.

I would simply move from that socialist haven. I do not even think there is any legal standing for the municipality to require you to pay income taxes.

The only local taxes I've ever heard of are a flat percentage of your pay check, or property taxes. I dont think you actually file taxes with local authorities.

Yup. Its 1.5% where I am at, and its a deductible on federal.

Yea. I dont know the rate for where I work, they take it out and you dont file anything. Then the city where you live will give you a rebate on theirs for part of what you paid elsewhere.

I failed to file my local taxes for 2002 (I swear I did). I had to refile them, it turns out I didn't owe any money. I had to pay and $80 fine.

Same in the area where I work. I pay taxes to the City of Grand Rapids, MI.

in KY, depending on the county, you could pay Federal, State, County, and City. Never any forms to fill out for County or City though, they just take your money and run!

We also have an earned income tax to the township - 1%.

The way I think it works is your local tax collector will get a report from the state in a couple years listing every person and their earned income reported on the W-2. If they look at that and figure you owe money, you'll get a nasty letter from them asking for the money + penalties + interest. At that point, you'll have to find your W-2 from 2007, along with your records of what you paid, and show you don't owe any money.

The thing to do, if you KNOW you don't owe any money, is to get the form at your convenience and fill it out. If you don't owe, you probably won't owe any penalty for filing late.

Usually not filing *IF* you indeed owe nothing is not much to cause you a problem.

Still not getting a form or not having something show up on an official document doesn't change what really happened.

A lot people don't get 1098/1099's and think they can just not report it.

It catches up with them sometimes.
