Default How to tell if a ethernet cable is CAT5 or CAT5E

i am planning on implementing a gigabit router in my home and plan on getting CAT5E cables to utilize the speed and was wondering how can you tell if an ethernet cable is CAT5 or CAT5E. I may of bought some CAT5E cables but how can I tell which cables for me to keep and which ones to put away.

Regular Cat5 will support GigE. However, unless your cables are fairly old, chances are they are Cat5e cables. As far as checking, take a look at the printing on the cable. Almost all cable that I have seen has some sort of identification as to which type of cable it is.

yea it will show what type of cable it is on the outer shielding. If you are buying cables in the near future, you have a 99.99% chance of getting a CAT5e cable. The only reason you wouldnt would be if you are getting your equipment from a store in the middle of nowhere

what do you guys think of these flat ethernet cables? Are they really the same speed and reliability as normal cables?

Startech makes generally good stuff, but I don't trust flat patch cables.

I wouldn't trust flat cables but if they meet 5e spec I got no argument. unless I had a meter to measure and test them.
