Default How does sand on the lawn work to fill in holes?

I have some dips and I put sand on (play sand). I see a lot of people do this. How long does it take to absorb (obviously is determined by depth--so say an inch). I guess rain simply sends the tiny sand particles below the larger dirt ones, right? Also, most people cover their grass up, because they put so much sand on there. Once the sand goes through will I have to reseed or anything? TIA!

WTF? I've never seen this done. Then again, I've never had my own yard.

You live in Alabama, right? If the grass is St. Augustine or Centipede, it actually grows over the sand (this is a technique that is used here in FL all the time).

someone told my mom they were sanding their yard, and she thought they were literally taking sand paper to each blade of grass to make sure the lawn was even. She's dumb.

I do. A friend put his like 3 inches thick. I can't see that filling in any time soon !

I do it to mine - usually takes about a month or two to cover over (depth doesn't really matter - those two varieties I've mentioned grow like miniature vines, that's how they cover the area so fast).

what people here do (GA) is airate their lawn, the machine that makes it look like a pack of small dogs crapped all over your lawn. This puts holes all over the lawn, second step is to get sand and rake it into the holes, mixing it with the dirt and clay, it hold water better than clay, and helps the grass grow.

Yep I like centipede for it's texture - it looks awesome when maintained - but for me it needs too much water, and it's not as cold tolerant as St. Augustine (mine actualyl stays green all winter, while centipede turns brown)

Well, I work at a golf course and what we use to fill in the holes on the course or the tee boxes is a sand/grass seed mixture. Just pour it into a bare area or hole and within a few days it will start to grow. The sand provides something for the seed to quickly germinate in. I have never heard of just using sand without grass seed mixed in....
