Default Yact: What happens if you don't change your transmission or coolant fluids?

ok, if you dont change your transmission fluid, something bad will happen to your transmission.

and if you dont change your coolant, then the anti-rust stuff in there will get all used up. but my radiator is plastic...

And does either have any effect on gas milage? (My gas milage went from 38mpg highway to 33mpg.)

edit: automatic tranny

Coolant, if it starts to get deposits in the engine, will cause heating issues, or force the pump to work harder, leading to power loss. Tranny fluid should be changed every 50k miles (i believe) and could, but most likely not. How many miles she got?

it's a sad story, I think. Imagine moving from a state of exhilaration (air guitar) to horror as you realize you've fallen out the window.

If you have a manual transmission change the fluid after the first 3-5K then never thereafter.

Coolant is usually good for 75,000-100,000 miles or every 3-5 years but every couple of years doesn't really hurt to change it.

and PLEASE recycle your antifreeze. DON'T dump it down your sink.

For the tranny ver similer to if you never changed your oil. Coolant, boiling temp drops and freezing temp rises therefore you are more likely to blow a freeze plug, or crack the block. Plus changing the coolant cleans some of the gunk that sticks to the walls of the coolant chanels.

The end tanks (or top/bottom) are plastic. Hell, even MB uses 'em.

Now? Some friends have an '88 Benz, one of the big ones. It has plastic radiator tanks.

now means last 20 years
my '84 and '88 audi has it too.

I guess they figured since all rads die, might as well make them cheaper.
Unfortunately a custom rad is cheaper than an audi replacement

automatic tranny.

now does either the coolant or the tranny have anything to do w/the 20% drop in gas milage (highway)?

yes, i know winter fuel has some stuff added that drops gas milage. but this 20% drop occurred within the last month. winter fuel went into effect in Oct, i think.
