Oh yes it can go bad. If I had a camera I'd take a pic of this stuff that's been sitting in my desk at work for over a year. It was white once, it's a lovely, smelly brown now.

edit: check that, it's yellowish, bordering on brown.

Apparently so if someone ever asked if protein could go bad, I could confidently say "yes".

*shrug*

I really should throw this away...

Well the whey protein I have is chocolate flavored, so it is already brown...thus it will never go bad.

It contains milk products. Milk goes bad, whey goes bad.

Getting serious here, it depens on you definition of bad. I happen to be a Product Development and Quality Control manger for a cheese company.

Whey powder or whey protien concentrate can not spoil in the technical definition of food spoilage as defined by the wastage of food product due to bacterial contamination. Bacteria can't survicve at the low water activity that exists when whey protien is in powder form.

It can however "go bad" as proteins breakdown due to oxidation and other chemical reactions. This chemical breakdown can result in off-flavors and colors, and can reduce the amount of usable soluble protien.

When hydrated however, watch the F**K out! Whey protien concentrate hydrated and at room temperature, can support just about every disease causing bacteria known to man. So mix it and drink it, or refrigerate it, but don't let it sit for more than four hours at room temperature.

I am a professional, but I am not a specialist in whey protiens, so take what I say with caution.

Dang that really sucks. I had some whey drink from yesterday and it tasted SO horrible so I came on here to make a thread asking if hydrated whey goes bad. And apparently it does! Sucks =(

Anyways, just thought I'd let you know people DO do searches before making new threads. Except you never see em, because they don't make em. Obviously.

Sometimes whey protein is just terrible tasting so you have to figure out if it's naturally bad tasting or if it's due to "souring."

It's definitely souring. It was the same powder I use normally, just a day old. It tasted SO BAD. It was pretty obvious it soured in some fashion or another.

Normally, though, I leave my whey in a water bottle at room temp all day at work. Gonna have to stick it in the fridge now.

Whey definitely gets funky. I have a tub of ON Vanilla Ice Cream whey that I've had for a while, and it tastes much worse (and is noticeably yellower) than it was when I bought it. I still drink it though

Yeah, it just changes it's flavor as time goes by. Yellowish brown you say? Sounds like banana and chocolate to me. Yum.

Yes, it starts to smell funny and according to others here it also changes color. I just threw out a small bucket of vanilla that was a year out of date and smelled funky.

Yes. I had a half-tub of vanilla ice cream flavor ON whey dated for 7/06. Cleaned out a closet last winter and found it, it wasn't horrible or anything but it stunk like spoiled milk. I didn't taste it.

With the stuff I'm using now, it tastes so gross I wouldn't be able to tell if it went bad. Srawberry banana smoothie FTL.

It can go bad. Rancid like. If its within say a couple of months I would say its fine. But like 5-6 months I wouldn't consume it. Better to be safe than with a bad tummy ache.
