Default sega genesis, 1st 32-bit game console?

the thing had a motorola 68000. from what i've read about the old 68000 chips, they have 32-bit general purpose registers and can address 4gb of ram if it wasn't for the 16-bit external bus.

first 32 bit machine is either 3DO or SNES. They came out about the same time.

well the chip itself did have 32-bit gpr and 32-bit instruction pointer. does that not make it a 32-bit processor? if not, then that would mean the 386sx is also not a 32-bit processor

I'm almost positive that the (short lived) 3DO came out first.

I remember playing 3DO Madden Football at the local Radio Shack and being blown away. Too bad the 3DO cost ~$800 at the time.

3DO was out before the Saturn. The Saturn was released before the PlayStation.

And don't forget about the CDI! It was 3DO's main competition when it came out.

Neither of which surpassed the greatness of the Neo-Geo. Too bad the games were $200+ ... KOF was/is awesome.

Agreed. I played Baseball Stars 2, Magician Lord, Samurai Showdown and KOF 94 on my Neo Geo. I miss it a lot.

'bit'ness of game consoles doesn't matter anyway. You tech guys should know that more than anyone else. Which is more powerful, PS2 with it's '128 bit' 'Emotion Engine' or your average 32 bit processor...?

Yeah, I thought so.

man this is nostalgic.

3do came out before the saturn. i remember working at babbages during that holiday season. sega was pushing 32x at that point, while having saturn in the back burner for the next season. jaguar came out around then too, boasting the awesome whatever bit they were perf by adding up bunch of processors. and their dialpad controllers.

i miss the snes vs genesis days.. when i actually dropped $70 for my chrono tigger w/out even thinking about it w/ my saved lunch money. now thanks to athd, i won't ever pay retail for a game ^^

Umm... Who said that it did matter, or that it had any direct correlation with performance?

I think the 'Emotion Engine' refers to the video processor on the ps2, which is 128-bit much like the Geforce 3 and radeon 8500 that came out at around that time and had the same performance. Our 32-bit processors on its own won't have a chance at rendering half as much as a ps2.
