Default Whoever interested in.......... Magellan 3225 GPS

Anyway, I have successfully mod/ creat Full 6 Million POI DATA for Magellan 3225.
It is safe to say, I am the first one successfully done it.

Original POI DATA file in Magellan called "US48_POI.POI" only 41MB.
Full POI DATA file I have created is 200MB.
(the new US48_POI.POI you download and replace the US48_POI.POI inside your Magellan 3225. That's all to it. Back up your old US48_POI.POI, nevertheless.)
Unfortunately, it will NOT work for other Magellan model.

THIS IS PERFECTLY LEGAL!

http://rapidshare.com/files/71...S48_POI.part2.rar.html

HOWEVER, please donate ANY amt of money to your favorite charity group.
It is holiday season, let's give a little to those kids who can't afford a decent meal.
You don't have to show me any proof that you donate, just act from your heart.
When you done, if you truely promise to act on your kindness, then use the password all small cap below.

1. Hook up the 3225 GPS to your PC with the cable that was provided.
2. Make a backup copy of the US48_POI.POI (located in the MAP directory of the 3225 GPS)
3. Download the two .rar files (do not change the names, make sure both files are in the same directory).
4. If you don't already have the Winrar software (which will decompress the rar files) locate and download a free copy off the internet.
5. Once you have Winrar installed on your PC, locate and double-click on the part1 rar file that you previously downloaded. You will be prompted for a password. Enter: activerandomkindness
6. Once you have entered the password, Winrar works its magic and decompesses BOTH the part1 and part2 files into a single file called US48_POI.POI. You will be prompted to choose a location for this new file. (I just put it in a separate directory on my PC)
7. Copy the new US48_POI.POI file over to the GPS (make sure to place the file in the MAP directory so that it will overwrite the existing US48_POI.POI file).
8. That should do it. (You may need to turn the 3225 GPS off and then back on again to see the new POIs)

Good luck!
***** PLEASE NOTE:
If you are not familiar with file structure of window system, please ask your friend to do this for you. If you are still unclear how files works, please stop this mod. Because there is chance you can brick your GPS and I can't be responsible for providing data file.

If you think the file is not working, download them again and use WinRAR to unzip the file. Both files I provided proven to works for more than couple hundreds people. As this thread also been viewed more than 50,000 times.

Chance that you can't make your files to work is because you forgot to do something nice to the world. *****

You could try, but I can't promise the format and registry will be the same.

Hi,
Maybe I missed it, but can you link me to the North America maps for the Mio c230? I may have misunderstood, but you said up above is the Canadian map and I need the United States. Sorry if I got it wrong. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if this is legal is it? Hacking your own system is one thing, but then distributing the files off another system so that others can do so without paying for the additional content is wrong, no?

Just my two pennieis...

thanks for the warning.
I took down the MIO maps.

but for magellan POI data only, it is perfectly legal.
many website provide free POI download (even though they are partial)
it does NOT contain map, so it is POI data only.

Anyone else getting a CRC error or password error using the "ActiveRandomKindness" password? I can't seem to open the file even after downloading twice. Any help or guidance is much appreciated! Thanks in advance...Owen.

I picked up a Maestro 3200 from BBuy this week before I learned I could have had the 3225 for $10 more at Costco. :frown:

BBuy has a 15% restocking fee and the only difference I see is text-to-speech which does not matter that much to me. Odd numbering scheme (for the 3225) since the 3210 & 3220 have the big POI file. I guess they value the TTS over the POI. I didn't think the relatively small amount of POIs would be an issue since it can open custom POI files from an SD card. I had been fiddling with that when I ran across the upgraded POI file.

The 3200 does not come with a PC connection cable and Magellan is late in specifying accessories on their website. I've download and unrar-ed the POI file (thanks TimeKeeper) but cannot do anything with it at the moment.

The backup/restore app (to SD card) does not backup anything other than user created files. It does not present any options to address ROM/RAM directly and the file is not in an editable POI file format. What cable or additional hardware is required to address the ROM/RAM on the 32xx?

Something tells me the 3200 may not have enough ROM/RAM space to accomodate the larger POI file but hopefully I'm wrong.

Yes I'm replying to my own post.

I just bought a Maestro 32xx cable for $8 on eBay (incl shipping). I hope that's all I need to find out one way or another if the lowly (for POI anyway) 3200 can be improved. I haven't used it much yet but it'll likely serve my needs either way.

Even factory fresh its a big step up from printing out Google & Yahoo maps to juggle in the car.

Thanks TimeKeeper for you great work.

Just read this post after I bought my 3225 from Costco yesterday. Sorry to tell you that I still got a CRC error or password error by using both "ActiveRandomKindness" and "activerandomkindess " passwords?
Any help will be appreciated!

Did you have both downloaded files in the same folder and with the same name (unchanged) as downloaded? It took me a few tries too since I tend to modify the names of files when I download them.

I used unrar (command line). One file is created from the two parts. I won't have a cable for a few days but I'm hoping someone can report success before then.

Works like a charm with all lower case. I can confirm the file works perfectly in my 3225. Thanks TimeKeeper!

Also the cable looks like just a regular USB to mini-USB connection.

Simply replace the file and boom! You have the yellow pages in your pocket!

Hey Timekeeper...

I don't think this is legal either. Here is the reason why. While there are some sites that offer free POIs, those were intended to be distributed freely and are to some extent similar to software (considered freeware). In the event of Magellan, Tom Tom, or Garmin POIs... all respective companies have to pay either Navteq and/or TeleAtlas a large royalty to host this POI data on their units. So... in that manner... I believe that sharing of the POI data is not legal, as the file is not considered freeware/shareware.

That's what I thought the cable was. I didn't think I'd find a proprietary cable that cheap on eBay.

Excellent news on the 3225 enhancement. If the file replacement doesn't work on my 3200 I may eat the 15% restocking fee and return it for a 3225. To have TTS & 6 million POI for <$40 more (incl restocking fee) is worth it.

I hope the price isn't going up on the 3225.

Dunnomuch, the price actually went down from $199 when I bought it to $179 with the new $20 online coupon. Check costco.com for the new price as it expires soon!

Download the WinRAR Trial here and use it to extract from the two file downloads:

Success has been reported. See my 11/23/2007 08:37 PM post above for file extraction details. Remember password is all lower case.

Here's what I did:

7. Copy the new US48_POI.POI file over to the GPS (make sure to place the file in the MAP directory so that it will overwrite the existing US48_POI.POI file).
8. That should do it. (You may need to turn the 3225 GPS off and then back on again to see the new POIs)

Boy did I blow it buying from Best Buy instead of Costco. :frown:

The 3200 didn't come with a cable so for $10 more I would have gotten TTS, a cable, and a better return policy (not that I'd return the 3225). I'm unlikely to return the 3200 since I've already ordered a cable. It was a reasonably good deal just not quite as good as the 3225 right now from Costco.
