Default Cobra 9mm, .380 guns?

Looking for a low cost handgun. Anyone know anything about Cobra 9mm or .380's? How would they compare to a Kel-Tec?

Buy something used from a reliable gun dealer.

The cheapo small guns are frequently not forged or stamped metal, they're cast (Sintered?)... and tend to disintegrate if you shoot them often enough. They are not made to do much shooting.

If you can't find a used handgun in your range, save some more. If it's for target shooting, you can probably get a nice Ruger .22 .

Revolvers are also very nicely priced, tend to shoot well, and are (generally) easier to maintain. For a first gun, revolvers are a good start. Bt the time you learn to shoot well with a revolver, you'll know enough about pistols to figure out where the convergence of "what I want," "what I need," and "what I can afford" is. You'd most likely end up with a .38 or .357 (which shoots .38). Not a bad deal.

Guns are a pretty subjective thing. Go to a good gun shop and talk to the counter people; tell 'em what you're looking for (function: target, defense, etc), and what you have to spend. Maybe check out a couple places. Also find out if they have NRA instructors on staff and what lessons will cost.

There is a lot more to gun ownership than purchasing a weapon. It is truely a thing where one slip or bad decision will ruin your life or end it. Read some books and hobbiest magazines; if you have a lawyer or can get to one, talk to them about the legalities of defending yourself with a handgun. Make sure you understand what you need to do to maintain it.

Good Luck

Scott

There was a pretty good thread on this topic recently. I'll see if I can find it....

for home defense, get a revolver. if a thief breaks into your house, u can empty all 6 shots into him, and said you were scared, and panic.

but the cops/judge wont buy it if you empty all 15 rounds into the suspect from a clip of a semi

What if you only keep 6 rounds in the clip?

This is mainly for self defense, with very little target practice. I was hoping to find something not much more then $200. I hear Kel-Tec is good for the money. Are they forged?
Great info, guys. Thanks.

I suggest a Ruger semi-automatic. You can get a .45 if you must, but I think a 9mm would do the trick. They're pretty sweet handguns for the money.

yep you can pick up a used ruger 9, 40 or 45 250-300
if anything ever goes wrong send it to ruger and they will replace it free, ruger stands behind there weapons and they consistantly pass 20,000 round torture tests..
I doubt a kel-tec would go 5,000 rounds without a problem, I would not trust my life to a SNS
Me, I carry a walther but they are a little more spendy

I happen to have Ruger in mind. They have a $40 rebate right now, though I'd go used if possible. I don't quite understand, the website seems to say the decocker and DAO have no safety?

Do not buy a handgun for home defense. You want a short light shotgun.

no point in having a safety in a dual action only weapon, it defeats the purpose, the only way the gun can be fired is by a long pull of the trigger.... Glocks dont have external safetys either, but they can only be fired
by pulling the trigger

definitely a good choice, but if you are going to go with a handgun, the steyr m9 or m40 are nice 9mm and .40 calibers respectively. They are made in austria by the same company that manufactures the Steyr AUG. They are more accurate than glocks, and both can be purchased for under 400$ i beleive.

check it out

One cool thing about buying a ruger handgun suchs as the P944 .40S&W is that you can also get a Carbine rifle that uses the same clips

Do the Rugers have a decocker and safety, or is it only one or the other?

one or the other - a decocker doesn't need a safety

I was going to say the same, but I guess you've already done it.

Oh, and you can't really do anything about pistol magazines being called clips. It's too widespread.

one or the other - a decocker doesn't need a safety
B.S.you still need a safety with a pistol that has a "decocker" all the decocker does is drops the hammer "safely" you could still fire the weapon via double action

And it is a long arse trigger pull too. The only way you it is going to fire is if you are determined to pull the trigger. I've got a Ruger P-95 DC. It has a heavy DA pull.

A cheap pistol can be more of a danger to the person shooting it and people around that person than the target. I know a guy who was nearly seriously hurt when a Bryco handgun malfunctioned.

Get something name brand used. Try a gun show, there's plenty of used guns in good contion there.
