Decent card? MSI R7850 Twin Frozr OC AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB GDDR5

Amazon has these for $165 shipped after rebate, I have a itchy trigger finger. Any reason to avoid?

No, it's a great card. I owned the Power Edition version awhile back, while it didn't overclock like I thought it would the card was well built and very quiet. That's a good price.

Basically, the performance in gaming of the following four 7850 card is similar. I personally will pick Gigabyte 7850 because of better cooling performance and warranty. to be honest, the pricing for MSI 7850 is quite attractive.

Agreed, that is a great card for that price point. Typically can not go wrong with MSI twin Frozr cards.

I made a mistake and ordered a NON-overclocked version of the twin frozr from amazon....

Should I still keep it? I also wonder how high I can overclock it at a safe level yet yielding good performance?

There should be next to no difference in overclockability between the OC and non-OC versions. This is because the cards are practically identical - the only thing the OC card is tested for is whether the GPU can handle the factory overclock. The GPUs in the non-OC cards are not tested for a factory overclock which means there are plenty among them that would do just as well in an OC card.

The factory overclock is very mild, only a 5% increase, whereas most 7850's will overclock by 20-30% without much trouble.

I hope to get around 1000MHz or a little higher while leaving memory untouched. I just want to play it safe for obvious reasons at first.

My Asus runs with the asus tweak 2.0.6.0 at 1250/5500 1.28v with 60ºC fan 40% on 3dmark11, max is 1.3v

$165 AR is good price but if you want better rating card then probably get XFX. I bought XFX Double D FX-785A-CDFC Radeon HD 7850 2GB for $180 AR at Newegg during promotion with 3 games in Dec. It overclock very well and has 5 egg rating. Mine has default voltage at 1.075 for 860/1200 and overclock to 1125/1200 at 1.125 for Farcry3 game at ultra setting. It can be pushed further but have not try it out yet. How well your card can overclock can be checked by reading the ASIC value using GPU-Z (click on icon at upper left corner after open GPU-Z). It is a good indicator. Mine is 86.2

@Dragon, that's not completely true.

I can't say much about the Egg rating, I have been hearing that Sapphire and MSI cards have been having problems but I have to wonder how much of that is because people having been pushing their OC's too high because they thought they had a 'good' card.

But ASIC is a terrible indicator of OC potential. People with sub 70s were able to get 1250+ OC, while people with high 80s couldn't even get 1250 stable.

It's purely a lottery in terms of OC potential. You can get a 'good' brand and get terrible OC and get crap brand and have a silicon diamond.

Yeah 1000Mhz should be every easy for that card. My non-OC Sapphire 7850 does 1175/1450 @ 1.17v 24/7. It will actually do 1225mhz stable on the core, but requires 1.22v which is more voltage than I want to use for 24/7 use. ASIC I think was 76.9.

Also, I personally would take a MSI or ASUS card over XFX every time. The double D cooler is among the noisier and poorer performing non blower style coolers and gone are the days of great XFX warranty support.
