As stated earlier, there are plenty of people who need the trucks they have and even more who do not. I am just pointing out that we all place value on different needs/conveniences so stop judging another persons car choice just because it doesn't line up with your value system. You are not better than them because you drive a cheap truck and they drive a Cadillac.

I buy a car every ten years or so, and I've been buying certified pre-owned since as long as I can remember. They practically beg you to take it. Most of the time, you can find someone who really took good care of it. Hell, if you have the cash and find someone who needs to unload a car less than two years old, you can usually take them to the cleaners because its such a buyer's market.
Rental cars company sales are also a good way to get a very new model on the cheap, but you need to know what to look for and what you're doing. I wouldn't recommend a rookie buy from rental companies.

Didn't mean to start a war about pick-up trucks.
I'm currently overseas and everywhere they have small to mid-sized pick-up trucks with diesel engines in them and the things are work horses. I'm thinking the US has just arbitrarily decided that everyone needs or wants a huge truck to justify the huge profit margins they make on them.
What pisses me off more is that many of them have a blue oval badge on the front.
Case in point: http://www.ford.de/Nutzfahrzeuge/DerNeueFordRanger

Having just gone through the process of buying a car only to find out a month later that no adjustments could save me from back pain the shape of the seat was causing me, and not an easy way to replace just the seat (due to the airbag, seatbelt mounts, and other factors), I'm just lucky the financial loss I took was not as bad as I was fearing. It was still very bad.
Dealerships are not your friend and never will be your friend.
Especially the second time around having salesmen and managers try to pull the same predictable crap to make a sale...
Deciding I needed a new car to present myself well to clients (my vehicle was being devoured by rust), ended up being a financial disaster, but at least I came away with a good car that is very nice to drive (and being self-employed traveling from one business to another daily, company owned vehicle, fully deductible!)
Back to the original point of this thread, there is a reason why there are a ton of Kia Soul's now on the road. 27mpg (was this before or after the adjustment?), wagon style body, $17k sticker price. Not everyone is going for the $30k vehicles.

I can buy a used 2011 Mustang GT for $26k, or I can buy a new 2013 for $30k. It's worth the extra $4k for a new one. Only a poor person who stress over a few thousand dollars when buying a car.

Oh man, I never thought of something like that.
Contrary to what I posted earlier in the thread, my wife and I did end up buying a 2nd vehicle this past weekend (2010 Honda Pilot). Seats felt super comfortable both times we test drove it, but I never considered them being uncomfortable for extended periods. Guess there's not really a good way to test that out before buying...
And yes, car prices in general are way out of whack. I'm not paying $25k for a mid-sized SUV approaching 100k miles. I'm also not paying $40-45k for a new one. Hopefully ours works out =)

An a positive note, used car prices are actually pretty reasonable. I've driven some really nice used cars recently with very low mileage and only a year old that are thousands of dollars cheaper than buying new.
I drove a 2012 Mercedes-Benz C350 Coupe about a week ago, it had 11,000 miles on it and they were asking $38,900 for it. A few weeks before that I drove a 2011 Lexus GS350 with 19,000 miles on it that was immaculate and they were asking $36,900 for it. This is a car that retails for almost $50 grand new!

I think that has a lot to do with the class of car that you are looking at. It is a different story if you were to look at a Honda Fit or Civic.

Thats a tough break but at least you figured out what was causing your back to hurt. Some people never figure it out and end up on painkillers the rest of their life etc. because of their favorite chair or some shit.
