But then they'll have that mummified body in the ground to go talk to from time to time.

Interesting habits some of us have.

you do understand that bodies are not just thrown into random dirt holes and covered up for nature to do its work right? If that were the case I'd be find with it.

But the amount of work, labor and money involved in western burial is absurd and minuscule compared to a cremation. The gas fire used in cremation is pretty efficient and cheap.

I'd rather donate my body to science fiction.

Ah, missed that, sorry. FWIW (which ain't much), I don't get atheists any more than I do religious folk. Both have their beliefs, or non-beliefs, but neither can say they know what is true. This is why I find the entire argument unproductive and futile.

Wtf? You are truly a massive dick. What is the problem with donating the body to a hospital?

Go read up on HeLa cells. She saved more people after she died than alive.

I know, but you guys hold nothing sacred. Look at what Lonbjerg said. You guys probably wouldn't mind throwing a party at a cemetery "its just like a really big field, what gives?"

And I'm the dick, lol.

It's simple nugget.
Me = the process in my brain.
When they STOP...I am no more.
Gone...to be recycled by nature.

When I am dead...I don't care...because I am no more...you are irrationel...some religious crap made you too attached to your body after death?

And "sacred" is just an excuse for feeding lies with no protests...

People go to cemeteries to mourn. If my parents were dead, maybe I would go there on their birthday or something. Its a spiritual thing. Its not all about you, its about your family and people who knew you.

Its not irrational, people have been practicing stuff like this for a long time. Humans are irrational anyway, and as much as I'm sure you hate your own irrationality, you are an irrational human. Everybody is. Take a quick look around you. Get over it.

The Muslims have the best burial practices. Wrap deceased in a simple cloth shroud, bury the same day, simple ceremony at time of death. Very dignified. Have a more elaborate memorial service at a later date giving time for family to gather. Embalming is just plain gross.

The only advantage to embalming is that it allows examination of the body in cases where foul play is suspected long after time of death.

You should start with cremation of the founding fathers and all presidents as it is a colossal waste of space, resources, and causes a lot of pollution to bury those worthless corpses.

I would love to see atheists push for that and become proactive in protecting the environment and not give in to the idiotic mythology of the abrahamics.
Darn im late to the pwn fest. Oh well it was fun reading the other pwnings.

So an irrational human is making a rational choice with cemetaries? I think you are contradicting yourself..a lot.

What is wrong in throwing a party? I would probably give out tickets to my family and friends to go out bowling as my final wish. I'd be happier if they went out bowling, but I'll never know.

I imagine what keeps me going are the same things that keep believers going, minus all the god/religion stuff. I enjoy being outside when the weather is great; I enjoy spending time with friends/family, talking and laughing about anything and nothing at all; I enjoy working to better myself, in all forms (physically, mentally, emotionally, etc.); etc.

Also, what keeps me going IS the hope I have for my current (and only life that I believe in) life. I have goals that I'm working towards, which I'm very excited about achieving. I hope to do something positive for this world, something that means a lot to me, and something that, when I'm old and gray (or bald, whichever), I can look back on, and be content with. I feel like I've found that, and I'm working towards that now.

Uhhh... I feel like you should ask yourself the opposite question: If there IS a God, and you can spend an eternity with him, in a place and existence that is flawless, why the hell are you wasting time in this life? I, on the other hand, very much want this life to last for as long as possible, and I want to do everything I can to get the most out of it I possibly can. I really don't see how your question makes any sense. So... you understand we believe that we get only one shot at an existence, and this life on Earth (or in this realm, anyway) is it, so you ask why we don't cut that life short? How does that make any sense?

Why? Why not off yourself here, and go to the place where you won't experience, or see, any heartache at all, and it's for all eternity? I think you should be asking yourself your own question.

It's actually awesome, because with the knowledge that this is truly the only chance you get, you're endowed with the motivation to cherish every moment this life has to offer, and make the very best of it.

That's the thing, my answer when faced with such questions is "I don't know", and I've come to accept this, and be at peace with this answer. I understand that you find comfort in having an answer that you can wrap your thoughts around, but that doesn't make it a reality, just something you swallow/accept to provide yourself a sense of mental comfort. I've found no reason to give that "answer" any validity, so I do not accept it.

By "it", I presume you mean religion. Anyway, tokie wasn't suggesting they commit suicide as a result of hitting anything resembling "rock bottom", or losing hope, but as a faith-based choice to make the transition from this world to the afterlife sooner (hence him saying "if heaven is so great"). Suicide for the purpose of reaching the afterlife sooner would be the ultimate act of faith. People of the Islamic faith seem to do it somewhat frequently it seems, with their Istishhad practices. They believe that such acts make themselves martyrs, something they will be rewarded for upon reaching "Jannah".

To live life to the best of my ability.

Why would I need a omnipotent being to 'promise' a reward for doing the right thing? For me any deity is an afterthought, having hope and doing the right thing as nothing to do with deity.

The cat is dead AND alive. While there is no true meaning to life itself, the subjectiveness of my reality is an illusion that i agree to entertain; mammal, homo sapiens, instincts, empathy, hate, love.
If i choose not to get up in the morning, i am not doing my part in evolving this universe towards whereever this is going. For the time being, I choose to get up in the morning .
