I use Linux and a GPU. I have frequently had to restart the BOINC service after a reboot, to get it to recognize the GPU.
Code:
sudo service boinc restart
Edit: I see, you're going from nVidia to AMD. You'll need to uninstall the nVidia drivers, then install the proprietary AMD drivers. Probably - worries about getting an AMD card working on Linux are one reason I didn't sign up for that 7850 in General Hardware.

Fortunately, the NVIDIA is on another box, currently deceased, the box, not the NVIDIA.
The above sentence made sense when I wrote it.

I restarted the client and still don't recognize the gpu.
EDIT: on the other box, I had to set the NVIDIA as discrete in the bios. In this box I'm using the ATI as the main GPU. Anything else I have to do?

Just to confirm the driver installation and updating the xorg.conf went ok:
type fglrxinfo and hit return or:
aticonfig --list-adapters
If you don't see your card listed then either the drivers didn't install properly or the xorg.conf file wasn't updated after the drivers were installed.
Try:
sudo aticonfig --initial -f
and reboot
On ubuntu you need the -f switch (force) to properly update the xorg.conf file.

Both of those commands work. However, my driver is VESA.
EDIT: Client_State shows I have everything I need. Don't know what happened to VESA. I'm going to uninstall it. Wish me luck.
Have you seen Gnome3? It's a completely different desktop concept. Wild. I still haven't found the shutdown button. Before login, it's in the upper right corner. Where it goes from there is anybody's guess.
EDIT2: It works without VESA! Tomorrow I will set up a second boinc client to see if I can crunch POEM with the gpu.

I haven't used gnome3 but I have used unity which is default for ubuntu these days. Unity is a poor mac knockoff. I switched to kubuntu which uses the kde desktop, which is more to my liking.
FYI, this is what linus thinks of gnome3: https://plus.google.com/+LinusTorval...ts/UkoAaLDpF4i
I think he's a bit old fashioned but he has some good points.

RT, there still could be a problem with driver loading. fglrxinfo output should look something like this:
display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.3.11631 Compatibility Profile Context

Thanks for the link. I'm trying a few things from one of the comments.
Code:
display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.2.11762 Compatibility Profile Context
Mathematica's OpenCLInformation function displays the following:
