PC stopped working

I have a Hewlett Packard M8300F and it first started having weird problems with the harddrive running really slow. Then the whole PC died. Now when I try to start it first of all when you plug it in it starts up without pressing the power button.. and there is no image displayed on the monitor. It also sounds like the fan on the power supply is running higher than normal.

I tried resetting the bios.. I tried moving the jumper to reset the bios password. both had no effect.

I am going to be building a new PC soon and will try to order a new bios battery and I will try the new power supply for the new PC in there as well.

Does anyone have any ideas what I might want to try?

Also.. this PC doesn't have a dedicated graphics card but it does have a tvtuner card.

Thanks denis, could it be the RAM too? Is the "hdd" the harddrive? I don't have an extra drive around to test in it so I have been trying to just get the bios to start without it. When I get my new PC parts I will try that harddrive in there.

Is it dangerous to try new parts in there though? I don't want to ruin more stuff.

Also, I have an older Emachines power supply that is 300w and I think could power this to test it but the plug has fewer pins than the HP. Is there some way to make it work or is that too risky?

Yes hdd is hard drive. i suspect the psu (power supply) do you get any beep when it post.

No, no beep. It's weird though because it makes a kind of grinding noise when it starts up... I always thought that noise was from the old floppy drives activating but this doesn't have a floppy drive... maybe it's the DVD rom drive though?

Could that noise be something else in the PC? The PSU maybe?

The thing is the harddrive is removed at this point.. as far as I know the only thing left that could make that noise is the DVD ROM. I can try unplugging that and see if it still makes it. Though I am thinking I will just wait before I do anything until I get a new power supply to test it with.. and a bios battery.

Check the heatsink cooling fan; your PC's five years old and OEM fan bearings (usually sintered bronze bushings more than ball-bearings) wear out to the point where they'll begin making a noise that could be interpreted as "grinding" but it's actually the shaft intermittently galling against the bearing as it spins, due to excessive clearance.

check the mobo for bulging capacitors.
