Default Friend is trying to pick between two cars

here's the 2 cars at the dealers:

Civic

Spectra

Her grandmother bought a lacrosse so she refused to look at one now. Plus the civic gets much better gas mileage which is important to her.

Seems like an odd choice to narrow it down to.

Totally different cars.

Cant reccomend either without figuring out what their goals/wants/needs are.

Let's see...

Both are reliable (Buick and Honda are near the top of that JD Power list)
Both have very low miles
Both are good deals
The Honda will be able to seat five in a pinch, but in the Buick they'll be comfortable.
The Honda will get noticeably better gas mileage, but the Buick is a lot more powerful.
The Honda will be great in the city. It's shorter, narrower, and easier to park. The Buick, on the other hand, would be more comfortable on the highway.
The Honda will hold its value better, but it's also more likely to be stolen or vandalized.
The Honda will make you look like a boy racer, but the Buick will make you look like an old person.

They're indeed well balanced. It's just down to what she's looking for.

I like the Buick. It is a newer generation car, and it is cheaper than the Honda. I'm tall, so the Buick would be a much more comfortable car for me. But is that Civic really cheap? It is a last generation car. It has low miles, but it probably sold for about that price when it was new in 2004-2005. The Buick seems like a much better value.

That Civic already looks old. The Buick still looks current.

A 3-yr old Civic for $15K? Might as well buy a new Civic.

She likes the colour silver!

To be fair, at least it is utilitarian if boring.

I'd say the buick, the 3.8l v6 that GM builds is bulletproof, can return good mpg (25-31hwy) if you are good with it, will provide alot of power versus the civic, and can hold more people/luggage/general items than the civic. The civic will definitely give great mpg, but will be slow and not as accommodating as the buick in terms of transport of multiple people

Should go with the buick. Lots or room and good gas mileage. My parents have a 2000 lesabre and they average low 30's on the highway which is great for a car that size. It never has had any problems in it's 190,000 miles expect a small oil leak in the rear main seal. Pretty good car / brand if you ask me.

Yeah, the 3.8 V6 really is a great engine. There's a reason they kept it around for several decades.

the kia is less $ but has more mileage.
if she wants to have it be worth more than a hill of beans in a few years the civic is the no brainer.

I wouldnt pay 16k for a 2005 civic even if it only had 8k miles on it. A new one runs around that price.

i'd say it costs less than $15k new in 2005, so the car actually appreciated.

i mean, the civic costs as much as THIS?????

this whole "buy a smaller car" thing gets blown way out of proportion.
