My all time favorite was my wizard in EQ. The high end crits that he did was so much fun.

I started out in WoW as a mage in bata but swtiched to a warrior. The warrior was fun but to many nerfs killed it for me. Came back and played a fire mage but I hated how it was all based off stupid dots.

I want a big ass nuking class that EQ had.

I like utility/buffing/dmg classes. Bard in Vanguard. Captian in LotRo.

Except in EQ i loved my Mage and SK. I liked all the different pets the mage could have. Air pet FTW

I like playing as a melee tank, just something about wading into battle and taking huge amounts of damage wearing heavy armor is awesome.

Historically I never liked sticking to one class as I get bored if I'm stuck in the same role all the time. I like having a healer, a dps, and a tank.

In Wow, my Druid and warlock both had over 100 days of /played by the time I quit for the last time.

I'd done raid healing and tanking with the druid in vanilla.
I did raid tanking with a warrior in vanilla
I did raid DPS with the warlock in vanilla.

Did small amount of raiding with the warlock, and with a hunter in the 2nd expansion (I forget what it's called, the one after Burning Crusade), but was always "casual" in that.

But at that point, lost interest.
I tried again when the next expansion came out. I leveled only my warlock all the way up. My Druid had been level 60, I got that character close to 80 but not all the way.

DPS warriors. I had a love/hate with my warrior in vanilla WoW. When they were allowed to perform they did amazing (party dps/raid tanking supported in small scale PvP) and when they didn't they were terrible (fighting mages, AV in general when it was zerg vs zerg(although I loved grabbing the vision buff and hunting rogues).

I stopped playing them in in BC and just kind of dicked around with different classes. When wotlk came out I started maining as a DK.

I have a love of small scale healing in dungeons or pvp so I've played a decent amount of various healing classes, but I hate it in raids.

I also had a love of taking my green/blue geared mage and WTF rocking blue/purple warriors in AV ^.^

I'm usually a melee dps class. I just wish there were some mmo's worth playing but I have not found one that can keep me engaged.

If you are going to break into archtype classes.... here are the main basic ones.

Non-dps damage soaking class. Aka the tank. Their job is to take the hits so no one else with them does.

Range DPS Stand in the back and let rip. Whether this is a caster, archer, sniper, machine gunner, or whatever. It's really all just "trappings" as they say in Savage World table top gaming. In the basic sense of the world, this is the character that stands as far as he can get to unleash the most damage he can. The reason he stands so far back is that distance is his only real defense.

Non-range Dps This is either the "off-tank" or the positional style damage dealer that stands near the front with the main damage soaking tank. Be it a rogue, monk, brawler, scrapper, berserker, or whatever you want to call it. These guys can take a hit or two, but not much more than that. Their job is similar to the range dps in that they are suppose to help kill things quickly. The only difference is this archtype needs to know when to step in as needed to take a few hits for whatever reason. Tank a bit low for a moment, something else comes along, or something incapacitates the tank. All those would be reasons to step in and take a bit of a beating until it is no longer needed.

Healer/Support/Utility Archtype This is the class that enchances everyone around them to do better. Either through direct healing, buffs on friends, or debuffs. Really again, it's all the same just different "trappings" when you think about it from a objective stand point. Sometimes games let this class type be able to soak some damage, and sometimes not. Sometimes they can deal some decent dps, and sometimes not. But their most important role is to up the efficiency of everyone else in some way shape or form.




From these 4 main MMO archetypes, everything branches out.

In Eve, I am almost always the Fleet Commander, and I usually flew as scout and logistics (dual boxing). I most enjoyed hunting people running missions or plexes either solo, or with a small group though. I enjoyed probing someone out, then warping in on them before they could get away. Just the fact that I had to be very careful and fast in order to catch the target made it a lot of fun for me.

I play alot of mmo's, but have 0 interest in anything considered end game. So, normally I'll get to end level, and restart a new character (or quit). So, I end up playing alot of different classes. I still have 1 character I normally think of as a main though.

My gut instinct said "melee dps", but thinking back to all the main's I've had over the years, apparently I'm pretty random.

Everquest - shaman - probably my all time favorite character through any mmo
Everquest 2 - Warrior
WoW - Hunter
City of Heroes - Blaster (ranged dps)
Star Wars tor - Commando
Aion - Spiritmaster (caster pet class)
Final Fantasy 11 - red mage
Final Fantasy 14 - Monk
Tera - Gladiator (tank damage)
The Secret World - pistols and swords
guild wars - elementalist
guild wars 2 - warrior
Age of Conan - Herald of...something..can't remember the name, caster that used the 2 handed sword
Vanguard - Monk

The next game I'm looking forward to, Blade and Soul, (whenever it actually comes out), I don't know that much about the character classes yet, but I'll probably choose a straight up no weapon kung fu class, if they have it

edit - oh to add, normally, I'll make 1 of every class when i first start an mmo. Play them all to 10 or 20, and figure out which one I liked the best, then stick with it.

Although I posted the actual archtype break downs, I didn't post what I usually play. I pretty much play everything. I have alt-itis and typically don't have 1 main character in most games. I also like to play the least favored class of a game that is still needed in groups for content. I do play a lot of tank type characters as a result. Which is fine as the tank characters are typically the most challenging to play in group content compared to any other class although they typically are the least "showy" in terms of what they do for the group.

In the vast majority of MMO's that provide lots of group content, the tank is the "busiest" of the group usually. DPS, especially ranged variety, is the easiest of the archetype classes. Once they know the proper rotation of damage output for their characters, their sole job is sit back and press a few buttons that takes chunks out of the health of whatever the group is fighting. Which is why most people gravitate to the range dps classes in MMOs. They are flashy usually and easy to play. Even if their dps rotation isn't the most optimized, that rarely means the group will fail on the content.

In many games, if the tank makes even a few mistakes, the content is failed. A heavy burdened is placed on tanks in challenging content typically. Support archetypes are a mix bag. Some times the content can be geared to be challenging for them, or like range dps a set rotation of abilities is all that is required to make a successful group.

This is why I liked The Secret World so much originally. Unlike most MMO's where you don't have to worry about positioning and aiming constantly, TSW forced range DPS into a higher skill cap to overcome content. Last time I played TSW it was HARD to do the end game content. I loved that. I just didn't like how grindy it was and how little end game content there was.

Try Dragon Nest: even ranged dps (archers) have to learn to dodge, since bosses have big.aoes.

Stealth class for soloing. Healer class for groups. SWTOR managed to combine the best of both worlds in the Agent class.

Tanks here. Played various tank classes for years in WoW starting with a warrior, swapping to a death knight after quite a while, then druid for an expansion and now back to the warrior.

Also played a warrior in Guild Wars 2, Trooper to tank in SW:TOR, Paladin and Warrior (various subjobs) in FFXI. I love the concept of big armor big weapons. It tends to take me towards melee classes generally the "warrior" archetype.

I do have a place in my heart for shaman in WoW though. Don't know why elementalist style classes generally bore me.
