You should get the best sounding headphones you can afford, or are comfortable spending, then add a modmic or a desktop mic. I use DT 770 Pros and a Audio Technica USB mic. If you dont want to spend that much on headphones, the JVC RX700/RX900 are very good for the money. I use M50s at work, and they are really good as well, and I'm sure they would be great for gaming.
Typically, the problem with gaming headsets is build quality. Cable connections or the mic usually break. If you dont mind buying a new set every once in awhile, gaming headsets are cost effective and convenient.

The only problem I had with the AD700s was that the padding wore down and my ears would touch the speakers. Otherwise, they were pretty good. I didnt want to. I had them for a year or two and wanted to check out other brands. Plus, I dented the grills on both sides, and the color...it was just time to try something else. I think I wore them for at least 400 hours of play time, so I got my money's worth. I didnt meant to imply that the padding wore out in a short period of time, but it does read that way. Removed that from my post!

Lulz, I didn't say anything about time. Headphones are supposed to be good for a long time, the padding however, tend to fall apart and need replacing.

Yeah, but I don't want to give the impression that its a problem. They served me well for a long time!

My biggest problem is usually my fat head. I bought a pair of Corsair gaming headphones, and they sound alright, but they push my glasses into the side of my head. Wearing them for an extended period usually means the side of my head will be sore/tender from my glasses. I miss my old, "crappy", $30 Plantronics headset as it had more flex to it, and didn't look ridiculously huge.

My Beyerdynamics DT-770 are very comfy with glasses.
