X48 chipset board that takes DDR2

I always take the time before new hardware arrives to read the entire manual so I am familiar with the hardware by the time it's in my hands. This saves much grief and aggravation! I've found lots of explanation of the bios settings over at clunk.org.uk forums (thank goodness for site to pdf converters! ) and will be "up tp speed" by Sunday. (literally hehe) Now to find decent DDR2 - this GS Kill DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 junk is OK but I think to take advantage of what the board has to offer I'm going to be needing better ram.

Also the performance on the DFI is absolutely insane. Lowest required windows boot/stable voltage for 4.0ghz. Note windows stable not prime stable:

Nah this board serously spanks my asus P5K-DLX. Also spanks my gigabyte P35-dq6. However if your a newbie that likes AUTO, i dont recomend this board. The board acts better when you have all the settings in hard style.

I am currently trying to arrange a group buy on MIPs mosfet waterblocks hosted by Jab-tech. Those of you who is interested in this block, or the striker II south bridge block, keep a close eye on cases and cooling section. Mips is extremely difficult to get in US. Expecially since they take no paypal.

Coming from APU's Hardware back in the Abit KT7 days (remember OPPAINTER who's a mod now at XS? ) trust me I like to have all those options. I used to unhide options in the Abit BIOS roms and add upgraded firmwares for the highpoint raid controller. Those were the days.

Lots of people recommend the Gigabyte boards yet the Gigabyte boards I remember had about as much BIOS tuning options as a Dell. :laugh:

So how did your new DFI mobo work out?

Your post has got me thinking about buying one, and they're back in stock at Newegg.

The picture in the Newegg listing shows a passive heatsink on the chipset instead of a cooling fan, which is different than what I'm used to. I wonder how well passive cooling whouild work for overclocking. Hmmmm.

I overclock mine with not too much of a temp rise on the chipset. I eventually bought a 60x10 fan and attached it with the clips. It did drop the chipset temps by about 4-5 degrees.

It's a decent board, pcb and vrm quality is good (from an MSEE point of view) BUT I will probably go back to my P5E WS Professional. With the same CPU and ram it was stable at higher settings. The ram is junk GS Kill 5-5-5-15 DDR2-800 stuff (The newegg $74 per 4GB kit junk) and that could be it.

So if your not particularly into overclocking this isn't a good board to get?

I have always built using ASUS boards for the features more so than the overclocking and because I feel that generally they make a good product.

I have lost the belief they make quality products after my last four system builds for work. I have had to RMA a P5K board, got a bad board back from that RMA and had to send it back. Two weeks ago my Maximus Formula board dies and so it gets RMA'd back and the board the send back to replace it was a brand new retail boxed version that also appears to have problems with the HD controller.

I am about to build a new gaming rig and already have 4 - 1 GB sticks of Mushkin Extreme Performance PC8500 that I would like to use.

After reading this thread and doing some digging I am strongly considering this board but I have never built on a DFI. I've been building systems for years and recall with DFI was not thought of very highly but that apparently has all changed.
