I got it to boot into live using the command b43.blacklist=yes. From what I read this essentially bypassed the the OS from looking for the wifi adapter.

Now the fun part begins. I have to use something called the terminal to install the firmware manually. yay......

got it working. peppermint is really lite on resources. This old laptop can handle it no problem and you were right. The terminal was pretty cool. All I did was type in the command and it did the rest.

My favorite method on old hardware is to install Ubuntu 11.10 Server first with only the default packages. (SSH is ok if you intend to use it.) Then "apt-get install lubuntu-desktop" will get you on your way.
