Chiro this is the 3rd time now that I will bring up the 4in Samsung free cell that they give away with a 2 year contract. it has the same exact soc as the gs3 with 1gb ram vs 2 and a 3 mp camera vs an 8mp and they clocked it at 1200 MHz to keep its performance under there flagship gs3.

Samsung just realeased its kernal firmware for download and I'll be the first to show you that phone benching at 1.8 GHz.heck I might buy the cell just to prove you wrong.

I have taken my gs3 apart to replace a screen and the soc board is tiny and sits on the boitom of the cell and there is nothing but plastic all around it.go ahead and open a gs3 up and see for yourself.there is zero airflow around the soc and nothing but plastic.

The RAZR M has the same soc as the gs3 and clocked just as fast also and is tiny compared to the gs3

*SIGH* Phones are generally built with a base plate to hold all the PCBs, cameras and other gubbins in place. Over this you get a plastic cover THAT TAKES UP ALL THE REMAINING SPACE BUT DOESN'T ADD ANY THERMAL COOLING CHARACTERISTICS.

There are only a few parts of the phone that generate any heat so it doesnt matter how tightly everything else is packed.

The bits that do generate heat are designed to work in an enclosed space with no cooling. They are designed not to generate enough heat to cause a problem.

Did you miss my reply? That phone is the SAME SIZE as a Galaxy S3. Exact same weight. It might have a smaller screen, but it's just as massive and is not actually a smaller phone, it's just shaped differently.

You keep saying this, but it's like you don't even understand the meaning of what you are saying.

Part of design is the size of the phone.

Size is taken into consideration. The design is such that the heat won't cause a problem, given ALL the characteristics of the phone, including materials used size and power usage. If you take those exact same parts and stuff them into something 20% smaller than what they were designed to be used in, it's going to run hotter. Simple physics.

I agree. That and power draw is affected as well. Smaller package means smaller battery, which requires a more efficient SoC.

Not sure why people think we can stick hardware in any space willy nilly.

Firstly people who design SOCs are not necessarily the ones who design phones.

SOCs are designed with a very conservative thermal profile. They are designed to work in any "normal" mobile device. They are not designed to need air vents as you stated elsewhere, they do not need heatsinks. Phones do not have large amounts of air space inside.

Why is it simple physics that they will run hotter if bounded with 5cms of plastic rather than 4cms?

No ones arguing that. Obviously a larger battery will give a longer run time and will take up more space.

That, however, has nothing to do with a SOC overheating because its in a smaller phone. Look at how the PCB is crammed into the Iphone5 compared to a large android phone. According to Chiropteran that should be impossible and the iphone5 should die a fiery death.

I just saw your reply today and posted in that thread and I'll add the same resp once here.the RAZR M has the same soc and clocked as fast as the gs3 while being thinner and lighter than the s3 while keeping a 2000 mah battery.

The Samsung stellar is a free budget phone and clocked slower and made thicker for marketing.why would Samsung give people the full power of the gs3 in a 20 dollar 2 year contract phone and steal sales from its flagship device

What is the average shelf life of an iphone? Are there ip1 still in use? I always kinda assumed they were sort of disposable. I know most of my friends iphones tended to die shortly before 2 years with no abuse. I also have an iphone 4 that has actually never left my house and is in immaculate condition as I only use it very rarely for media consumption and the HW button is pretty much shot and it rattle a lot on the vibrator switch and volume buttons. My iphone 5 already started to rattle on all buttons. I SGS1 that I gave to my son last year has been through hell and back and doesnt seem to be eroiding like my ip4. Im not saying its crap but I think these phones are only made to last 2 years or so. Lord know if my plastic sgs3 will last me another year.

I just wonder is all. I still have my 7 year old razr and it has really held up well. But I think several years ago they just built things to last. My 2000 samsung flip phone still works as does my startac!

My co worker just upgraded to an iphone5 from the original, and it still runs well. In fact, he gave it to his kids to which they play games from the apple store that still work

My iPhone 4 is still as good as new. I passed it down to my brother who used it for a while and then he passed it down to my father and it's still kicking. The only cosmetic problem is the antenna got stained from using a bumper but I am assuming I can clean that up if I really wanted to.

imma let you finish Eug from the first page of this thread, but Galaxy S3 was the best selling smartphone of all time! (talking about 3Q 2012)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20253276

iPhone 5 might regain top spot after a while but the data clearly contradicts "oh Android only sells more because they move a large volume of low-end phones".

Just a friendly reminder that forum posters talk out of their ass all the time. Personally I like the bigger screens on Android now and I used 2 iPhones in the past.

Heh, get up to the times. The new mantra is "only Samsung makes money from Android".

(Qualcomm and Nvidia certainly aren't *losing* money on it, btw...)

Oh man... They really clobbered Apple... What will Apple do? I wonder if they think about that 2m sales gap at the end of the 4S's year when they're lounging back on their huge piles of money lighting up cigars with hundred dollar bills?

I don't recall him saying Apple was doomed.

Very impressive for an individual Android phone to outsell an iPhone.

It's extremely impressive regardless of it being a quarter preceding a new iPhone launch. Does anyone recall the last time a single handset outsold the iPhone in a quarter?

Didn't the Galaxy S2 outsell the 4S the first month or so?

I think the GS3 is the only single device to outsell the iPhone. I could be wrong though.

The 4S was nearing its end lifecycle and people were holding off for the 5. Whereas the GS3 had no competition till the 5 came out.

Also keeping in mind that Samsung reports shipped not sales. Apple reports sales only.

While we're "also keeping in mind" remember Samsung alone sells many different models of smart phone and Apple sells how many different models???

But, Samsung wouldn't be doing so well were it not for the fact that they stole Apples designs. Clearly Samsung modeled the Note/Note2 on the iPhone and needs to be sued for it...

/sarcasm

I was waiting for someone to bring that up but you have to make note that it outsold the iPhone 4S which in itself is not that great an achievement since Apple killed the sales of the 4S once the 5 was released and since the 4S was out for over a year lol. It is an impressive showing from Samsung regardless, I think this is the first time any iPhone has been outsold in a quarter.
