Default I'm obese.

It's been excuse after excuse for a very long time and I am sick of it. Yes, I am a mass of fat cells. I have been trying to turn it around for years, but it seems every time I lose 15 - 20 pounds, something gets me depressed and I gain it or more back.

I was fat as a child, and during high school I got up to around 275 pounds. During my junior/senior years I got into a health kick and got down to 193 lbs. (which was actually too skinny).

When in college, I got depressed freshman year, sort of dropped out of life and got back up to maybe 260/270 by the end of the year. After that I went up and down from around 280 to 310 lbs. I started hanging out with my friends by the last year of school a bunch and got myself down from around 295 to 280. But then graduation came, I couldn't find a job, got depressed again, moved in with my parents, and ballooned up to a record setting 325 where I have been hovering for a while.

I am done with it though. This isn't really a cry for help or a call for advice--I know what I need to do. It is mostly a statement of fact. I am obese! and I need to change. This is my year to get in shape, and I will do it. No more excuses.

Thanks for reading my self-aimed rant. Wish me luck if you want, but I know I can't rely on luck. This is up to me.

Sounds great Scotty! Can I ask what you will do differently this time around, to prevent the relapses that have caused you so much trouble in the past? It's probably important to understand in order to keep yourself motivated. Acknowledging the problem is a really good start!

I'm not going to quit. Basically the same as my first big change around. It is the year of no excuses. It is already starting to payoff in my hobby/hopeful future career as I am taking the time out for things and not using "I'm tired" as an excuse.

Write your goals down. Set some short term goals and long term goals. Dare to think and dream of the way you want to be and pursue! Don't give up hope! I'm going through the same thing myself. I vow I'll get a 6-pack one day. I've already altered my lifestyle with better foods and exercise.

I am with you ScottyB!

I weighed 165 for sooo long (I am 5'8" tall). Then over the last 8 years I got up to 252lbs and 43% body fat. Over the last 2 months I have lost 22 lbs and 7% bodyfat by replacing soda with water, eating much more vegetables, and rarely eating out.

My goal weight is around 165-170 now, and I look forward to meeting it. I feel like I need to get in shape so I can live long enough to have kids and see them grow. I hate feeling winded when just walking up a small hill, or climbing a set of stairs.

I quit smoking, so this should be easy compared to that :laugh:

Sure! You have to set long term and short term goals. Let's say for instance for long term, in one year you want to have a six-pack. That's fine, but you need to establish short term goals in order to obtain that long term goal. Here's an example of mine.

Long term goal: Be less than 10% body fat and have a nice looking six pack.
Short term goal: Lose 7% body fat within 3 months from your commitment date.
Even shorter goal: Measure fat/weigh in weekly to determine progression of diet/exercises.

Just remember to always be positive. That you can do it and to train your mind into thinking that you can do it. Positive reinforcement is the way. When you look into the mirror, imagine yourself already achieving the goal. Be confident. Every step you take forward will allow you to reach your goal further, so think about the consequences of why that chocolate chip cookie will ruin your awesome sexy body.

mmmmm chocolate...**blinks** whew it was just a dream!

thanks man. I'll keep that in mind. goals are something new for me. I've never really set goals before so i find them a bit overwhelming to think about. sounds silly but it's the truth.

Good luck! I started trying to lose weight in the beginning of 2006, lost 12 pounds, then got sidetracked, and am back to continue what I started. I kept the pounds that I lost off, but I still need to lose about 35 more pounds.

First step is hitting the gym, going over and over becomes easy. after the first week because you will then realize no one cares / stares / laughs at fat people or weak people.

Im in the same position, when I went to my university, I was roughly 300 lbs, after the first semester I was 266.5lbs on the scale when i came back, last night the scale said 256.0, so 10+ more over the break. Gotta keep looking at the goal line and never forget it brotha! Best of luck. But what you had going on for you earlier seemed like the term known as "yo-yo dieting", because those are quite large gaps inbetween your ups and downs of weight. Part of what got me on the track I am now is protein powder - I read extensively on their advantages (Help boost your metabolism, build lean muscle, and makes you feel full, and low calories for a full meal worth). Read and lurk around here for guides and information, they really do help!

Also I do agree, you should make a thread here of your results every week or so - encouragement is the best thing to get you started and keep going. Think of the millions who make the proclamation to "lose weight" as their new years resolution. Tons aren't it? But are the gyms packing in a ton more people a month later? Nope. So stick with it brother, come here if you need more support. You can do it.

Good luck man, I'm up around 300 pounds myself. I've been eating less and working out a bit more, but I'm still far from healthy. Got about 50 or so more pounds that I want to drop (maybe more if I can do it without sacrificing too much in terms of food (I'm one of those people who "lives to eat."))
