Darktable is not bad with a few bugs, and it is free but slow. Aftershot Pro is very quick but lacks many features such as red eyes removals, airbrush, and blemish removing tools as well as no lens distortion correction, and is not free.

The 2 above programs are what I mainly use under Linux, and I use them in conjunction with Gimp.

It's worse with almost old hardware. I have a bunch of stuff that will never work with any version post XP because the mfgrs don't offer signed drivers for those particular models.

There is a way to install windows 7/8 in a "virtual" hard drive without partitioning. I have win 8 dual booted this way.

Default no need for W´s since 2003

really enjoyed that
never any win on my private computers.
reminded me a very old buisness W computers sporadic harddisk physical fail problem. No W admin could copy the HD with W and tools. dd_rescue from the knoppix 5.2 live cd did it in 15 hours.
