Seems the games themselves also have to be coded for Linux. Most arn't. Damn. I figured ALL steam games would work. There is a decent amount for Linux though.

Yea, there's still a ways to go to get things ported over. Getting in early will show support for the platform though, and there should be a few good games that can be scored cheap.

I need to look at this... but since I'm paring down my hardware, I'm not sure if I want to...

That sounds like a much more tempting reason to act than the games.

It's kinda lame that they still don't have an RPM on the site for RHEL/CentOS...

You could try this...

I did test http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410...9071258869580/
on CentOS 6, but:
1. glibc.i686 is required, while I prefer pure x86_64. Tolerable
2. Requires: glibc >= 2.15, openal-soft >= 1.13, zlib >= 1.2.3.3. Showstopper on el6, unless one does radical things.
The spot.fedorapeople.org/steam does have a *.src.rpm, so in principle a
rpmbuild --rebuild *.src.rpm
could do, but again we hit the version dependency here and there.
Enough for one day.
[Edit:] To be fair, RedHat/CentOS/Scientific Linux/Oracle is a stout workhorse that by design cannot be expected to "play". It is for "work". Fedora is the different breed (in rpm-based distros).

No TL2
TF2 seems to be a fun shoot 'em up though. Runs pretty well, and free.

I bought about 8 games so far. Steam is shaping up to be pretty nice, methinks.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. The developers have really put in the time and sort out a lot of the problems.

Steam for linux seems to have shaped up greatly. I was in the beta at the start of the year and it was.. flaky. But now it's awesomely stable for me, and works as well as the windows version.
With crusader kings 2, and soon EU4 native for linux I don't really need any other games

Do they distribute a 64bit binary, or do I still have to emulate 6x86 in the kernel, and carry around a second set of libraries?
...Mostly interested, because the lack of 32 bit binary broke HLDS for me, when I updated to a 64 bit architecture (on gentoo, where I don't normally need any 32 bit cruft, because I just compile for 64bit)

Steam is 32bit only for now.
This is the biggest problem I have with ports to Linux from Windows.

It's hard finding specific information on their site, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's 32bit.
Edit:
Jodell got it.
