Dakota leather is very thick . Its not great leather and they put a platic layer and press a grain onto it. This makes it feel and last about the same as the leatherette . I think on newer cars its actually a little less soft then leatherette but using leather products on it is pointless because of the plastic layer.
Nappa and Merino on then other hand are softer and need protectants

Wait, you think I'm a teenager? Or is that just an insult?
Poor track record based on my/family/friends experience, mechanics I know and general car enthusiast community.

Yea but German cars are more complicated and in general have more parts. Sure some prices are the same or even cheaper.

Also, no crack on trim or buttons falling off. And I also thought my car had real wood? I'd give BMW a good job to make the trim feeling like real wood if it was plastic.

Its an 07 328Xi, it does have 120k on it I believe.
PS I will try to take some pics of her interior. Trim is def fake wood though.

They leased it for 2 years. She's a 1 percenter and only owned their last 6 series for a little over 2 years before she wanted to upgrade to this one.
For those arguing about reliability, it will be gone long before it starts causing them any trouble. It had just a bit over 10k miles on it when I drove it and they've had it almost a year now.

Negative. It's definitely real wood veneer. There is no fake wood in any E90.

But consider this. Since E53 is the first generation X5 and we all know owning the first generation German car may be a little hassle, it's possible that material quality is not as good as all other BMW's. I mean.. we are not recommended to buy the first year model for many reasons, and we are talking about the first generation of the vehicle that's whole new to the world.
Plus, all X5 at that time was produced either in US or Mexico. I don't think it's such a great idea to give much faith to American/Mexican labor from early 2000's. Not sure if those materials are from US or Germany, but even with a good material, if labor who assembled them mess up, whole thing could be messed up.
On the other hand, because of those factors, I don't think how bad X5 from that time should translate to BMW in general.

My moms E53 is a 2006, I believe it was the last year of that model.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything. It has been debunked long time ago. Every manufacturer has it's procedures and similar factories across the board.
WHERE the car is made is completely irrelevant.
Heck the Vanos issue is pretty common with these vehicles. Chances are, factory received this part in a box and simply installed it.
Now days, factories are assembly lines. Hardly anything is made in a factory and almost everything is outsourced from around the world.

This is correct. My step fathers 3 has been better. He did have an issue recently with the locks, but I was able to fix it with a simple fuse swap (again a well known issue).
Truth is, reliability from car maker to car maker is pretty close now days. Every car/model/manufacturer has it's quirks.
NO car is made to last (there is no incentive in that for any car maker).
Heck take a look at the dealer revenue and that will tell you the story. They make most of their money in service/not from selling cars.

You are a troll due to that fact that any time BMW is mentioned you intentionally derail and post about your family's neglected off lease car issues.
I mean seriously, we've had these full out debates with you numerous times already, and every time you aren't able to post any pics or hard data other than that you took the door apart and broke it, and that you vacuumed the buttons off the radio. Oh and kiddies on forums with craigslist $3k cars also have problems.

Ok idiot, go ahead. Pull up E53 handle issues.
Apparently your great BMW can't make a fuckin handle right. How they designed it is pathetic, my 10 year old son can do a better job.
It was simply designed to FAIL. I took the door apart and fixed it, something you probably would have no idea how to even start/do.
And I will get the pics up this weekend!!!

All I'm saying is you come into every BMW thread spouting this nonsense and have not yet backed it up. I'll wait for the pics. I also want pics of the leather so can criticize that as well.

What you are saying is that you don't like/agree with what I'm saying.
I'm not here to change your mind. If you want to go hump BMW, do that by all means.
More power to BMW!!! Good for them.

No, I'm saying you're a seemingly biased ill-informed idiot, basically.
Hate to delve down to personal attacks but that's my conclusion after debating this with you so many times in EVERY thread you derail which even mentions the brand BMW.

Since you are clearly a BMW douche, the words above mean as much to me as the shit I took this morning.

Sigh . . . might as well lock this one up.
VDC, I'd suggest that you refrain from posting anti-BMW crap in every single thread where BMW is mentioned, and I'd suggest that the rest of us ignore you if you do, because it destroys otherwise legitimate topics.

No reason whatsoever to lock this thread. ATG is like a 'regular' garage with all sorts of banter, it's not like we have to stay 100% on topic unless maybe the OP asks for it.
The thread is fine, even with the garbage. It's all stuff that needed to be said.

I've yet to go to a garage and hear people arguing that all BMWs suck because my mommy owns one and it has been an unreliable POS.

My next beater might just be a 335i. Fast enuf with JB4, but somewhat disposable and not something that should stay in the garage when it's cloudy.

I'm willing to donate a month of Carfax to look up any VIN for any vehicles to check history, to fortify claims of new purchases.
