What happened to SCSI drives?
Seriously..........
Back in the late 90s it was all the rage and although very expensive was valued by gamers a lot.
Did it die a natural death?
just curious.....

Yup, it was replaced by SAS.

Good riddance. Bulky cables, terminators, and daisy chains... try getting SCSI cables through grommets for cable routing (we didn't). I look back fondly sometimes, but then I remember the expense and the hassles. It reminds me of coax ethernet/token-ring; one minor problem and you're fracked.

As pointed out above, it's still here but has evolved. They are even using the commands I believe to speed up USB 3.0.

Yeah, every server I have put together at work has a SAS drive or two.

The cables were pretty unwieldy, but having multiple devices per-cable was very nice and a feature I'm sorry to have lost with SATA and SAS.

In ye olde days o' yester yore, I had an all-in-one Compaq with naturally limited expandability and the external chainability of SCSI awesomely allowed adding external CD-R and Zip drives. 
So it was not just about performance but features, which would take many years to trickle down to mainstream/consumer standards.

SCSI is an interface. You could have a SCSI SSD.
The correct answer to the OP is that clock speed has outdeveloped shielding and because of that serial interfaces outperform parallel. The pendulum may swing back at some point.

I can't wait for our new system mod to get rid of the legacy stuff. Unfortunately, they're making us stay with these damn MO drives that are SCSI which were obsoleted by SONY in 2008! Only the military. Friggin IA issues.
At least the rest of it going SATA.
