well. guess I can't have it downclock when it's idle. Is it bad to leave it at 4.2 all the time?

Not quite sure. Some choose to leave it that way. If given a choice, I'd turn on all the power saving features that would reduce its clockspeed at idle. Since yours doesn't seem to be behaving that way, it shouldn't be too big of an issue.
