Why do people say Canon cameras are easier to learn on?

Canon (not Cannon lol) are no better or worse to learn on than any other fully featured camera.

Some make it more difficult , some make it easier.

I feel canon menu systems are simpler to use than nikons but this is more on the pro models than the entry stuff anyhow.

I suspect more people may be inclined to jump in on the super cheap market. And if thats what they learn on, thats what they'll stay with when they upgrade. Particularly if they've bought plenty of lenses already.

Wtf are you talking about? You do realize that the D40 is approaching 6.5 years old and has long been discontinued? The Rebel XTi is the Canon equivalent and both were similarly priced.

Currently, Canon lists a cheaper DSLR on their site than Nikon does...

Since you're friend has never owned a DSLR before, I don't think it'll matter how "easy" one is over the other. With that said, he should go with the brand which he feels has the better lenses. Remember, Canon and Nikon are LENS companies who also happen to make cameras. In the end it's the 4" BEHIND the camera who takes a good picture. I own all Canon, mostly because my father gave me a bunch of stuff. If I were buying it on my own, I'd go Nikon. Just my $0.02.

Used both Canon and Nikon.

The learning experience are pretty much the same.

The approach to button placement and menu logic from canon and nikon is quite different.
