How long have you guys been in the fighting game community? Trash talk has been around in arcades and I've seen many fights.
Also, I am glad most of you just got into internet gaming in the Xbox Live era because trash talk like this has been around for years. I remember seeing it in IRC years ago.

Bullies arent on the internet, its people who get bullied in real life that flock to such titles then treat others the way they get treated.

Just thought about something. Maybe this discussion popped up because back in the day you would say "hey do you play that game online?" and you might get a response like "wow, i didn't know you could do that I dotta try it!".
Today you try the same thing "do you play MP?" response is "everyone is a dick online."
I guess since MP is not new anymore and everyone knows about it, everyone knows there's a ton of assholes online. I know some people who write off all MP in every game for this reason. for some games this is not fair because the entire game is based on MP, but that's their feelings.
The best thing to do, as has been mentioned previously, is to get a few friends together and stick with them and ignore everyone else unless they can be added to your friend group.

Ever since fighting games became competitive in the arcades, which was with the release of SFII. There was the original SF, but it was so horrible in single player mode, no one even thought about playing it competitively. There was also Karate Champ, but no one played that competitively either.
Also take into consideration, when you were playing in the arcades, you were actually playing for money. The loser would have to put in a quarter if he lost so that did raise the stakes.

I'll throw in my two cents. I gave up on xbox live after the first Gears of War came out. All of the high pitched little brats being as obnoxious and racist as possible completely turned me off to online competitive play. All the games are the same anyway. The companies keep republishing Counterstrike and people are salivating to throw open their wallets and give them their money. Not me.

Game bullying has always been around.
I remember all the playground trolls giving me fake advice on NES games before the Internet became the source for all that. I would spend money to rent and try again just to find out that I was lied to again by the same person and fell for it again. Lost money repeatedly this way.
I was such a gullible little kid.
Games were designed to get you stuck and not have obvious ways to continue back then as a way to add depth, mystery, challenge, length, etc. All you have to do is stand around and wait for the built-in hint in most games today.

After my first year of owning a NES I learned to never take any advice from friends.
Nintendo Power was a god send.

depends on the game. TF2 had the best overall group of people i have ever played with. im talking about random people here. i guess that probably cause you didnt run into many 10 year olds. now go play halo or cod and its another story.
the kid who wrote that is only 22. wtf is he talking about he it was uncool to play video games when he was young. nintendo and sega are older then him. uncool?
