Need digital camera advice!

Hello All,

I need to get my wife a point and shoot camera that can capture a still during movie mode. She played around with the Nikon 1, but she does not want an interchangeable lens. Can someone please guide me?

A sony RX-100 will also do it but it's expensive.

I believe a fair number of cameras will do this, although there might be some restrictions on the stills taken. My Panasonic ZS15 (about $160 or so depending on sales) does this, although you're limited to 3.5 megapixel stills. I believe the ZS19 does this as well (and does a better job at the video part than the zs15). You can find the ZS19 at Costco for $220.

She doesn't have to change the lenses on the V1... $299 w 10-30 VR II lens (27-81 equivalent)

The Sony DSC-WX150 is an excellent poiny and shoot camera. We just purchased, and the video and picture images are "outstanding". This camera is very efficient, easy to use, and has a display of 460,000 pixel resolution (LED screen). Shoots 1080P HD, and also captures AVCHD Video. You will not be disappointed with this camera.
P.S- By the way, Sony has it all over Nikon in the intermediate level, no question. Check out the forums ,and photography websites, (professional). They speak highly of this camera. Our price was $169.00, now they are back to $189.00. If you open a Sony card, you can receive an additional $100.00 off. You can't go wrong.

Super glue the lens onto the mount. Supposed issue with ILC solved.

If she is okay with the size, a Nikon V1 for $299 is by far the best value camera that can do that trick (snap full-rez photos while recording), unlike other cameras that can only snap reduced-rez photos while recording. Just because you can swap lenses doesn't mean you have to. She also gets a viewfinder to help with composition under difficult circumstances such as glare on the LCD on a sunny day, super-fast autofocus, etc. The larger sensor size compared to most compacts will allow things like out of focus blur. Downside is that the kit lens is effectively 27-81mm, though you could always crop, to some extent (10MP doesn't give you that much room to crop if you want to print large posters though).

If she is not okay with the size or wants more reach, a Sony RX100 produces slightly higher image quality than a Nikon 1, has an effective focal length of 28-100mm, and the lens is quite bright on the wide end, at f/1.8-4.9. Since it's 20 MP, she has plenty of room to crop to make the effective focal length even higher. Like the Nikon 1 it can also take high-rez photos while recording video. Downsides: expensive, and autofocus and boot-up time is fast for a compact but can't touch a Nikon 1 or DSLR, especially for tracking moving objects.
