The SF Area/mountains are incredibly green and lush in the winter and spring, and then turn brown in the summer, so it depends on what time of year and the rainfall conditions. Obviously, if you drive from LA to Vegas, it's going to be brown. It's a fucking desert.
Drive down Highway 1 along the coast, or drive through wine country, it's absolutely gorgeous.

...and what if you hate the hippy culture of the bay area? That then becomes a detriment and it takes even MORE money to make up for it, not less
Again, when it comes to scenery, I will reiterate that while I'm sure there are some scenic things here and there, much of the state is a barren wasteland, and the places that ARE scenic are surely rivaled elsewhere. I mean, I hate where I live (Seattle) but I've yet to see something in CA that is more scenic than the Puget Sound, and that's just one small sample size. So again...just refuting the silly "best scenery" comment.

Now I take your puget sound and raise you death valley. Barren wasteland can be beautiful, as proven by death valley/joshua tree.

Look, you silly CA people need to move on. If your state was so great, you'd be off enjoying it, not arguing with people on the internet about how much you love it (in a thread about the American South, not about CA). The "best scenery" comment is a misnomer and you know it. You can find cherry picked pictures on the internet from every state that look nice, especially at the right time of year. That doesn't mean that you get to label that state as having the "best scenery".
If you like your strange, hippy-infested tax-happy desert, that's wonderful for you. Enjoy it. Believe it or not...nobody else cares, nor do they envy you as you'd like to think.

I am busy enjoying my great state, however I'm at work with nothing better to do except argue with people over the internet.

Ok, ok, that's not fair. That's a view from the south side of the mountain. Don't worry, it looks nice from up here, too:

Yea, I know there's mountains in CA. A friend of mine just climbed Mount Whitney. He posted pictures...it was hideous and brown And yes, I realize that my pictures were equally cherry picked, which was kinda the point. And hey. It's not raining today. However I'm not going to apologize for Seattle's weather. I do believe I prefaced this whole thing with "I hate Seattle", and the weather is certainly part of it.

I see a lot of "mountain" colors, which is to say white, brown, and green.
Anyway, I actually like Seattle - I'd move there, if it weren't for all the goddamn rain.

I'm not saying some of the reasons aren't apparent in other geographic locations like some areas in the midwest but these reasons are seemingly more apparent in the south.
There's also all the stereotypes that are (for the most part, true) about southerners.

They still have a valid bill of rights. And the state is not overrun by liberals that's bankrupting the state with their various social programs paid for by the tax payers.

I'm sure you aren't talking about Texas and their budget deficit, are you? Texas, a state that had a projected FY 2012 deficit of $13.4B, second only to CA for projected budget deficits for FY 2012----we'll know how bad the various state deficits were when FY 2013 begins. (Typically for states, fiscal years begin July 1.)
And while NC isn't as bad as TX with a projected deficit of $2.5B for current fiscal year (2012), NC's is worse than that liberal hotbed Massachusetts, with its current FY projected deficit of $1.8B. Hell, MA is even better than FL, with its projected deficit of $3.6B.

I hate when children post drivel and contribute nothing but spouting party line crap that's patently false.
