I keep giving it chances just because everyone seems to love it so much.

The characters are really different. You must think all blacks look-alike...

Dominic West is from an ethnically Irish family, but born in England. More to the point he went to Eton (the super-hyper-ultra-elite English 'public' school) and if that doesn't make him English it makes him an Old Etonian, which is a nationality all of its own.
Old Etonians - is there nothing they can't do? Prime Minister, Chancellor, half the front bench, Mayor of London, and (as of today) the archbishop of Canterbury. And they even get the roles of American doctors and street-wise Irish-American cops over actual Americans.

I was 100% you. I couldn't stand it and didn't get all the godlike hype. I watched about first 5, and couldn't get into it. Watched 2 more... nope.
Then I gave up altogether. 8 months later, I was forced to watch it when internet was down due to Hurricane Sandy. Now I'm hooked.
I'm surprised to find people disliking season 2. It's one wholesome season that focuses on singular event in the shipyard. It felt like you're in Mario water level after playing ground level all the time. I loved the believable characters, all with their own motives in the shipyard.
And the season ends properly with wrapping up everything that it introduced at start.
Season 3, you're back in the familiar grounds of season 1.

Same. I love the last three. And the last episode...wow. I just wanted more and good on them for not giving it to me. That is how a TV show should be ended.

Season 5 was my 2nd to least favorite haha. I think a lot of it had to do with the reporter. For some reason I do not like that actor.

I don't understand how season 1 was hard to follow. I never had a problem.
Also, season 1 had my FAVORITE scene of the wire, (besides McNulty banging a couple prostitutes in season 2 ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN5e....1.4CsEGEvu63E NSFW

Omar and Bubbles were amazing actors. It confuses me that everything they have made since was terrible.

Boardwalk Empire is good. Don't think I've seen anything else with Bubs in it.

The whole point of the Wire is "follow the money to follow the drugs" Drugs, money, and how it is all connected to every corrupted branch of civil and social life.
1: establishes the Investigation--so the Po-lice and the Drugs gang. The front lines.
2: trafficking
3: Politics (this is the first time we get the candidate and his campaign, so while politics is throughout, this is specifically a politics season)
4: education
5: the media

The way David Simon explained it, I thought the "real" point of the show was to portray an American city in all of its glory and all of its shortcomings; to show what causes systemic failures in its institutions.

Oh yes!!
Season 1 was good, but season 2-5 just pure gold. I loved 2-5 equally.
It's probably the best written and acted TV show of all time. ALso I loved how the writer doesn't dumb down the show for the general TV audience

yep. I believe season 5 was the actual darling of the creators--being the Simon spent many years working for the Herald (or Sun? forget what it is/was in Baltimore)
that season was sort of a black sheep as well, as it focused more on journalism and the newspaper industry as a whole--not really about the drugs and money, but the inherent limitations, the rampant failures, and the degradation of journalism, forecasting the rise of the blogosphere. It was quite prescient, as the concept for the season was fleshed out before the major news organizations really started to feel pressure from the web.
IIRC, they were given a short order for that season, so it ended up a few episodes shorter than desired. Still, it ended perfectly and probably remains the best visualization of moral and economic bankruptcy in our contemporary institutions.

I LOVED this show. I watched the series in its entirety last year. Damnit this thread makes me want to watch it again. There was so much dynamic in that show, everything tied together and was real. The show didnt always go where you wanted it to go, but it went where it should. I had to youtube mcnulty and stringer talking lol, impressive acting. I had no idea. However this clip is entertaining too on casting the actors.
