It's no secret that AMD lacks the finesse that Nvidia has when it comes to drivers. Also you will always have games that are biased towards one architecture or the other. BF3 works better with Nvidia cards than AMD.
However AMD has managed to make huge strides with their drivers and they always catch up with driver revisions.
It's always wise to wait when a new product is released to see if it has any issues and for the software dept to work out the kinks with the new drivers.

I always find that AMD cards have lots of untapped performance where as nvidia is basically flat out from release.
Especially when it comes to CF

Yep no denying when it comes to AMD hardware but drivers have always been a work in progress. I still however would not get an XFX card. Also try and get a reference card, unless you are getting one with some fancy cooling and know for a fact you won't be watercooling it

I didn't see anyone saying that 70fps was unplayable.
Its got nothing to do with how much you spent, its either playable or it isn't, how much you spend will dictate whether you are satisfied with the performance you paid for, it does not make something playable or not..
There is too much my stick is longer than yours and anything shorter than yours is rubbish, i play everything at 60fps as that's all most monitors can show, so now 60fps is unplayable ?.

I think that 70fps was under very favorable conditions. Single player and no AA.
Also we have no idea what the minimum frame rate was like.

Well that's besides the point, 15fps is unplayable to me no matter if spent £1000 or £20, but 15Fps may be considered acceptable for a £20 card, it still does not make it playable and at the other extreme 240fps does not became unplayable because another card for a similar or cheaper price did 260fps in the same game.

As you said above, no one is saying the 7970 was ever unplayable, but if you played BF3 and were buying a card mid last year the 670 would have been by far the better choice.
6 months ago it was a no brainer to get the 670, now with AMD price cuts, free games and driver revisions it is a no brainer to get the 7970.

Its perfectly possible for 240 fps to be unplayable as well. 239 frames at 1ms each, 1 frame at 761ms.

While that's theoretically possible, in the real world that would never happen.

Used to be true. Since Cats 12.11, HD7970GE > GTX680 in BF3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=qR3ewLMbywY
A stock HD7970 GE beats a 1254mhz GTX670 in BF3 multiplayer.
Despite being slower, a 1254mhz GTX670 doesn't have any power consumption advantage over the 7970GE:
"The AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition almost always had one extra graphics option selected, or a higher level of AA, or a higher resolution compared to the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DC II 4GB due to its higher performance."
Jan 8, 2013 Review
Most HD7970 cards overclock to 1150-1175mhz without much effort. I personally would not get the XFX 7970 card though as that cooler is one of the most disappointing in the HD7950/70 lineup.

I never had a problem with microstutter in bf3 at 1920x1200 with 1 7970. So unless they made it worse I doubt its a problem game. I did see microstutter at 5760x1200 however the 2x7970s can not play at this resolution whereas 2x680 can. I never tested with single cards at that resolution. But its normally at the higher resolutions you see smoothness issues not at 1080p.
