If you mean people that don't want shitty $1 games that should be free and be tied to apple and their communistic iTunes store with specs that change too much as the only way to game on the go, then yes.

People who don't care for gimmicky shovelware with the depth of a puddle of mucus and prefer some semblance of quality are now "basement dwelling"? Interesting.

This isn't 2008 anymore. There are many full size non indie games available for Android and iOS. These platforms make the DS and Vita completely pointless.

Haha yeah right. Where is monster hunter? Pokemon? Mario? Little big planet? Street fighter? Uncharted? Not on phones I can tell you that. Unless you want to count emulators and bad ports of old games.

Playstation has good hardware, but is there anything on the DS with the production value of, say, Bastion? It wasn't originally made for iOS but it looks beautiful on it. Most of the stuff on the iphone/ipad is shovelware crap intended to grab a quick dollar, but games like Bastion prove these platforms are capable of high quality titles.

Um...yeah. Production value doesn't just mean graphics. All the games I mentioned are very high quality.
The problem is what I mentioned before. Changing hardware specs and lack of experienced game developer support. You don't see capcom, konami, square, ubisoft, ea and others releasing their top games on those devices. However, they do release games on the DS or Vita.

Yep but still they don't have top games lined up for android or ios the same was you have all kinds of anticipation and all the previews for the next major monster hunter ds game. Or the next Mario game. The iOS is not their first choice in a portable game platform.

They will increasingly target the phone arena, as handheld consoles die out. They are losing market share at a breathtaking pace and this is bad news for hand held console gamers, but good news for people who don't have one but still would like to play something decent.
Changing hardware is a problem, it's the problem that PCs have had for years, though PC games have continued to exist. The problem in fact is quite limited for the iphone. There are dozens if not hundreds of various android phones and targeting them all isn't easy, but only 2-3 contemporary iphones (5, 4s, maybe the 4), so building for them must be easier. And other than resolution they share hardware with the ipad.

I guarantee that phones will not replace a Nintendo ds in our lifetime. We already mentioned all the reasons.

ds is targeted for children. phones aren't.
i definitely don't think the handheld market is really in competition with the mobile platform either.

I would have said Vita and DS but DS being the more popular of the two...
It's not all kids stuff either. There's a lot of titles that I wouldn't expect a 6 year old to understand and play.

The reason things like this don't take off is because unless the controller device is bundled, few people will buy it no matter how good it is.
Look at how poorly controller's on the PC have done in the past. They've been around FOREVER, some of them are great, they are produced by major companies like Logitech and Microsoft. NO ONE HAS THEM. Unless it is bundled, no one will buy it.
Conversely, I expect that since MS will no doubt bundle Kinect with the next xbox, it will fricken explode in popularity.

Or people will refuse to buy the Xbox if they force the kinect crap into every game.

I'm not sure why you people are arguing about Vita or (3)DS games being better. I would say that the device that's better is simply the device that's on you. Yes, my Vita has far better full-fledged games, but when I'm out of the house, how often do I have my Vita on me? Probably not even 10% of the time. How often do I have my phone on me? Probably close to 100% of the time. I went on a trip and almost decided to not bring my Vita with me.

The iPhone is a good general-purpose portable system, it is not the best handheld gaming device. Your argument for the iPhone is that you have it on you 100% of the time. So what, I carry my phone and 3DS 100% of the time on me. Mileage varies.
Tell me what makes the iPhone a superior Gaming device as opposed to the 3DS or PSV, or better yet, why there isn't room for co-existence.
