Pro uses high grade MLC NAND.
Non-Pro uses cheaper TLC NAND, which has lower endurance (think 5 years of heavy use instead of 15) and lower write performance.
The Pro is currently the fastest consumer drive on the market, while the non-Pro is competitive with most other vendors' high-tier drives. I have the non-Pro and have been very happy with it. It's an upgrade over the Crucial M4 I was using before and much less expensive than the 840 Pro.

Of course, by heavy use, you mean "constant writes" and not "loads on a few extra games every few months," right? Because some people seem to think they are "heavy use" when they are really pretty moderate.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider myself to be a heavy disk user. I've had my 840 for a month, mirrored a 200GB Win7 install onto it, then secure erased and installed Win8 from scratch and I'm only at 400GB of writes. Not a lot considering the drive's lifespan should be hundreds of TB of writes.
EDIT: AT review estimates 270TB lifetime, so I'm almost 1/540th of my way through the drive.

Yep, I did the same. The 840 pro has better write speed but otherwise the 840 non pro is a very competitive performer and unless you're writing 100-200gb per day or more should last year's and years. Samsung's done a good job.
