Now one can argue whether or not an MMO is "art" but is certainly seems arguable that it's a type of art, and it's certainly "art" that we people who are interested want to see created.

We aren't paying money to save money - or to make money - we are paying money to ensure that some "work of art" that we want to see is created.

It's like the Statue of Liberty. France gave it to the US and it sat in a warehouse, and then there was a nationwide drive to get a location for it and a pedestal for it and people all over the country paid money to see this happen. They didn't get a discount to take a tour, or a percentage of the tour profits... they paid money just to see that it was created.
That's a very optimistic view of it, which you're entitled to. Personally, I see it as a way for an established businessman like Jacobs to get seed money without any of the usual controls and costs associated with angel investment. It's a complete win from his perspective, because otherwise he would either have to kick in all of the startup funds himself, or give up a significant chunk of the equity to get capital. That's the way it typically works.

I hope he makes the game. It is a niche, but it's a niche product that I would pay for access to. But at the same time I will continue to feel like crowdfunding should be used for projects that have no other way to get funded.

I hope to the Gods that they don't send three email updates a day for the next three years.

Yay! Here's to one game I'll wait with anticipation and be proud I helped fund into existence.

It is really quite clear that you don't understand how kickstarter works, man, lol.

How do you think they get a total on the project? Amazon processes the payment and holds it until the project is funded or denies it if it isn't.

In the kickstarters I've been a part of, Amazon never "held, processed or charged" anything to my account until the kickstarter ended.

They get a total on the project because you pledge that amount, and kickstarter keeps your pledge amount on record for them to charge when the kickstarter closes.

Please don't try to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about when it's something I personally have experience with.

What sunnyD sez; you authorize the charge; but the charge is not actually made till kickstart completes. You can cancel anytime before then; and if you are a real arse - you can cancel the authorization without cancelling the pledge; then when the kickstart ends the charge will fail; that's why developers wait until they receive the payments before doing anything and why they expect a certain amount to not be paid (ala torment's comment a few days ago in that area).

Dudes...all I was saying was that the payments were processed through Amazon. When I pledged, I had to login to Amazon. And that is what I said was down earlier.

The payment is being held in their system, not your bank or card account...
