Would take something extraordinary for me, like Square and or Monolith getting the old team back together from SNES and PS1 projects and announcing something like a proper Xenogears remake.

so i read "According to the WSJ, Sony plans to focus less on massive hardware improvements and more on integrating social gaming aspects into the new machine. User interaction will be a key component."
not very happy if that is true

Agreed. Social interaction is the most useless and fucking annoying addition to games/gaming.

You can take that two different ways. If that means they are finally going to make it have party chat and cross game chat and make sure every system comes with a headset, then it could be a good thing. That's how I took it at first, but maybe I am wrong.

Me too, once Last of Us and God of War Ascension are done I am pretty much gonna call it quits on the PS3. My Xbox 360 has been dead to me for a long time, only resurrected for Halo 4 then dead again.
The biggest problem with console releases is launch titles. It's like each time a new system comes out there's nothing to play on it that is worth buying. So you sit on the system for about a year. That is something I would really like to see changed.
I mean, even if they went ahead and said "sorry guys we want to push back this AAA game and revamp the engine for our new console" I would be thrilled. I think sometimes we are lucky to have one game worth looking at.

The article doesn't say the PS4 won't have "massive hardware improvements" or that hardware won't be a big part of the push. It just says is that Sony will "focus less" on hardware - not "won't focus" or "will ignore." All the leaks suggest the hardware will be a decent jump from the PS3 so it doesn't bother me if Sony marketing wants to spend more time talking about "user interaction" and "social gaming aspects," whatever that means. The underlying hardware seems like it will be there even if they talk about it less.
The best way they can improve "user interaction"? Kill off Playstation Home. Six years of "beta" and it's still so awful it seems intentionally designed to discourage social interaction. Why does anyone want to waste time running around to access features and functionality? Just give me well-designed menus so I can get to stuff quickly and easily! It would be a shame if they decide to double down on Playstation Home. That place needs to the torched and the earth salted so nothing grows there again.
BTW, it's interesting to me that the leaks and buzz about the PS4 have focused on it as a gaming machine while the Xbox 720 rumors have emphasized it as an entertainment platform. This is the exact reverse of the launches of the current generation, when Sony touted the PS3 as an all-in-one entertainment machine that could do everything and justified the inclusion of the Blu-ray drive while Microsoft talked about gaming on the Xbox 360. This round, Sony seems to be going after the core gamer while Microsoft is focused on the broader entertainment market. Things change yet remain the same.

This is also interesting to me. I have said that Sony will have to prove themselves for me to go in day one, but if they come out with a great machine focused on gaming while MS is worried about all the apps they can stuff on the box, that will hurt MS in my eyes. I don't need to go to all your apps, I have a phone and tablet that I can use to access stuff like ESPN, IGN, and stuff like that. I want a machine that will play badass games.
One of the things that I am worried about with the nextbox is the inclusion of Kinect on all systems. I don't care about kinect at all, and if it is forced in to every game on the xbox, then I am going to be less likely to want one. I go to work and then go to the gym, when I play video games I just want to sit and relax and enjoy myself.

The last two icons are a X and a box. Just coincidence? Or are Sony and MS finally teaming up? Damn, I hope so.

sony wont be teaming up with ms.. but they will likely put the most elaborate system out there. not because they are original or anything, they just proved that, but because they think theyre elitist.
i have a feeling the new consoles will be capable of 3d gaming, but the extra horsepower they add will be used to do it which will leave the final visual quality to be barely any better... just in 3d! ugh

I really hope they support 4K. It may not be mainstream now, but a few years from now?

None of the current display connector standards can carry the 4k resolutions at greater than 30Hz frame rate. The latest HDMI 1.4a standard support 3840x160 at 24/25/30Hz and 4096x2160 at 24Hz. No display standard exists today that carries 4k signals at 60Hz. Any implementation of 4k support in the PS4 would be restricted to 30Hz refresh rate, which undercuts the idea of future-proofing.
And what would be carried over 4k connectors anyway? The GPU in the PS4 won't be able to handle games at 4k resolution so you can forget about that. There's no video standard for physical or streaming media for 4k content at the moment either. Future 4k Blu-ray support, assuming that happens, is undefined at this point, so who knows whether the optical drives in the PS4 would support them. All this money and effort to support the handful of $25,000 4k televisions in the world today? To play non-existent 4k movies or games off optical 4k discs that don't exist? Sony might as well announce the PS4 will support unicorns and leprechauns. 4k may turn into the next big thing but it's nowhere near ready for Sony to devote money in a mass market product.
The drumbeat for 4k is the worst kind of behavior of the tech press that's latched onto its latest shiny new toy while completely ignoring financial and technical limitations. At most, Sony would announce the PS4 will upscale to 4k like the Sony S790 blu-ray player - "fake" 4k but not native 4k since the latter is a more fantasy than reality.

I expect 4K streaming/downloading/caching from how disinterested Kaz Hirai, CEO of Sony, sounded about a 4K Blu-ray standard at CES. With the H.265 codec, you should be able to get decent 4K quality streaming at 20-25 Mb/sec and pristine quality at 40-50Mb/sec (and for those complaining, if you can afford a 4K TV in the next 5 years, you can get an Internet connection that will give you that kind of bandwidth). At this point, I think a disc standard just seems too old fashioned and we'll be moving on to a streaming/downloading world anyway.

i read they will focus a lot on power consumption too, and strengthen the media playback capabilities. they want their consoles to be ultimate entertainment hubs.

What's funny/sad is that the PS3 is already a DVR in Japan, but because of how bad CableCard is as a standard (and the fact that cable companies are so terrible at supporting it), we get none of that nifty functionality in the US.

Wait, aren't you the same person who says the best feature of Xbox is its ability to interact with friends and shit? Now that Sony will add something similar you say you don't like it?

They'd have to go with a newer HDMI spec unless you want to do 1080p 3D gaming at 24Hz.
