Firing order as folows ;

1-6-3-5-2-4

The distributor rotates counter-clockwise, when facing the engine, the left cylinder banks are 1-2-3, the right side 4-5-6.

Thx, but I don't have a distributo - I have a DIS [Distributorless Ignition System] - looks like a small rectangular box just to the left of the engine...

I personally like to make my firing order on a v6 go like this: 1+2,3+4,5+6 so spark plugs are firing two at a time and opposing cylinders have a symbiotic performance gain, much like the doubling of magnitude of two soundwaves hitting each other.

Look closely at the coil pack(s), they should be numbered, if they are not, reply back to me and I will look it up in one of my master manuals or PM Quixfire, he is a master Ford technician, he will know it off the top of his head

Not sure if you are familiar with an Aerostar, but it's pretty tuff to look into the engine compartment without a lift so I can't read the #'s...

What we have now for the DIS is
465 (front of engine -> )
321

and it runs, but it's slightly missing somewhere. The problem is that the original problem was that it was missing, so now not sure if it's the firing order, or the original problem. The wires have been replaced and the plugs are pretty new. We found one cracked porcelain plug and replaced it, and now (since we *think* we have the firing order correct) are going to pull all the plugs cuz it keeps missing.
We don't think it's a burned valve, b/c it runs too strong.

The chilton's manual has contradictory diagrams on this so they were no help. Whenever you get a chance to look in your master manual (1993 v6, 4.0L) would be great. Thx

well, we pulled off the spark plugs (minus the one we already replaced) and they were for the most part, pretty fouled up

one had the porcelain around the electrode all split and broken - hopefully anything that fell into the cylinder was small enough to get blown out. the other ones were terribly fouled. Not a good overall showing for Bosch 4way plugs with only 20k miles on them.

At this point, we feel relatively confident about the firing order now - it's just a matter of swapping the plugs (hopefully) at this point

Along with Quixfire you might also PM Pacfanweb, he works as a Ford technician/mechanic as well. I could tell you the firing order

try this as well

Sounds like you've got some pretty serious fuel system problems..

Either that or the engine is simply worn out and eating oil.

Here is the best I can do for the sparkplug wire routing. 4.0L OHV

As for the firing order, it is 1-4-2-5-3-6
Base Timing is 10* +/- 2* with the spout disconnected and engine at operating temperature.

One thing I have seen a lot on these vehicle, 4.0L OHV, is leaking intake manifold gaskets between the upper and lower plenums. They caused a rough idle, lack of performance concerns.
