Default How to get something manufactured with plastic?

I was wondering how i would go about getting something manufactured in plastic .. I would like to design an addon for my pc, and wasn't too sure how i'd go about doing it.
BTW .. anyone know how much something like this would cost? addon would be about 1ft by 1ft .. Any suggestions or information would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Alohas

You would have to get in touch with a plastic fabricator.

I'll tell you now, though, it will not be cheap.

Just one piece??? The beauty of plastic is that it is easy to manufacture tons and tons of the same part.

If you want just one piece, considering getting it made from metal. If you can't do that, you'll need to find a prototype shop in your area. Be prepared for a stiff bill though, since you'll be paying their labor rates ($70 per hour).

If you know someone who can machine plastic, you might be able to get them to mill your part out of a chunk of plastic, but even the raw material won't be too cheap.

it totaly depends on shape. The tooling for the die wil not be cheap. not at all. You could defer the cost if you made a ton of them and sold them though. The plastic may only cost a few cents, but the tooling will be astronomial.

may be more cost effective to use sheetmetal and a hand brake depending on shape and complexity. just a thought.

It's hard to have a single piece of plastic made since molds are used to make the piece, which means you are pretty much geared up for a production unit. An injection molded piece of plastic must start with a design, measurements, and aluminum die. The durometer of the plastic must also be determined. This would be highly expensive.

A better choice would be to make your own "mock-up" using stock peices of plastic and solvent adhesives.

edit: or as evadman said, sheet metal would probably be a better choice.

awsome guys .. thanks for all the great advice! It does need to be plastic, and its kinda important that it looks good .. I think i'll go the route of having a bunch made.. I would want to do all the prototyping myself.. i just wanna give them say an autocad file, and have them press that for me ... After they do one, and its all good. I'll order 100 or so to sell.. Maybe i'll break even! lol

I called a couple fo shops in my area before when I was thinking of having a keyboard made. The chepaest I could find was $2K. They was masses not prototypes. Your best thing is to find someone that knows how to do it and willing to help you out. Unless you have tons of cash sitting around and know that whatever you are making will hit the ground running.

If you only need one for a prototype, find someone who has a stereolithography (SLA) machine. You will need a 3-D CAD file of your part. One place where you can get an instant online quote is here.

An SLA machine creates a prototype cheaply without the need to make a mold.
