The 4 is actually quite a significant upgrade in terms of the SoC. It's much, much faster.

It makes more sense that it was a one time thing, rather than Apple moving to a bi-annual release schedule.

Indeed, with the shift of the annual schedule to Q3 / Q4, perfect timing for Xmas.

You're right. I had read your post as one of those 'Oh noes, Apple released a new version of product I bought 6 months ago, now it's totally obsolete!!' sort of things. But cautioning waiting to see if they release a new one on the same schedule as they have had in the past is good advice.

Thanks all, I ended up with a MS surface. I think it can (mostly) replace my ipad.
And, as a bonus, I'll have no problem getting 5 years of general use out of it.

Surface RT or Surface Pro? I assume the RT since it is in the same price range. Good luck with it, it is a nice looking piece of kit.

Replace for basic iPad use yes, but it will be an interesting experience. A friend of mine just bought one because he needs it to test his websites, but he hates it. Mind you he's Apple-biased, but then again he likes Windows Phone 8 so he's not anti-Metro by any means.

Yeah, definitely a bold statement on a first gen Microsoft Surface device.

Even *if* I upgrade to windows 9, I can always recover it back to windows 8 and get the same performance as when it was brand new.

Pro. It was $250 more than an ipad for the 128gb.

Well Windows is moving to annual releases apparently so it'll be more like Windows 13.

??? Are you comparing apples to apples (no pun intended)? A 128GB iPad is $929. A 128GB Surface Pro is $999. And that 128GB Pro is more like an 84GB Pro (84GB of usable space right out of the box).
So yeah, let me know how that Pro holds up for you even 2 years down the line. For some reason, I feel another rant thread being created in the very near future.

Rant thread based on what? It's really no different than a regular windows laptop, which btw last at LEAST 5 years, particularly for web browsing and email.
80+ Gb of usable space is plenty, especially when compared to an ipad which will only hold pictures and music, oh and can't be expected to last more than 3 years.

Define obsolete. My 3GS is running 6.1.2 just fine...

Since when it is a 2 year life span? If that's the assumption, you can also assume that Apple wouldn't bother with updates for that HW. As the 3GS is nearly four years old...and still getting updates...and still works...and still works just as well as it did four years ago, I'd say that's a SWAG and certainly not based in reality.

Well, to be fair you should mention that the Surface Pro has a micro SD memory card slot, just saying.

Can the original iPad with 3G be used for GPS navigation with Google Maps?

No. You can get basic directions, but if you want turn-by-turn, you need an iPad 4 with Siri and Apple Maps (which actually works half decent - I ran it side by side with my Garmin in Phoenix, and both offered roughly the same directions).

with the google maps app from the app store, i believe turn by turn directions are included within the app itself. it works on the 3GS and 4, so i dont see why the original ipad should get left out! i think the app requires iOS 5.1.1 which it supports
