27'' ips gaming monitor

i'd like your opinions guys.

yes i want an ips, for cute color, but also want good gaming experience!

I've just been researching this too. I was recommended the HPZR2740w. Looks like it's pretty good.

The notable difference between it and the Dell/Asus monitors IPS monitors in the same range is the very low (4.6ms) input lag. That, coupled with relatively fast pixels for an IPS monitor leaves it with about 1 frame of lag. That's about as good as you can get with an IPS.

Dell has the best warranty in the industry and it's all I will buy. I used to run planar but they went all tn and I moved on. You might also consider a va panel. I use both va and ips panels and both are great for color.

The only negative about the Dell is it has pretty bad input lag. 22ms. So it's likely a minimum 2 frames of lag. That's not good for FPS/driving/twitch games. Probably fine for others though.

Check tftcentral.

Manufacturers fudge the numbers on pixel "gtg" speed all the time. There's no set criteria for how they come up with the number so they seem to make it up as they go along. It's almost like manufacturer contrast ratios in that regard.

Pixel speed is only half the total equation when it comes to lag. The other half is input lag. Put those two together and you get how much of a delay the monitor will introduce.

so, should i go 2560 x 1440 resolution (16:9)

or

1920x1200 ? (16:10)

That's a personal preference. How good is your GPU? Will it run 2560x1440 comfortably?

Personally, I just don't see the point in get a 27" monitor at a low resolution like 1920x1200. Might as well get a smaller monitor (22-24") at that resolution.

its a msi radeon r7970 (not oced)

is there a bigger resolution available on 16:10 ?
or 1920 x 1200 is the max yet?

The next size up that is 16:10 is 2560x1600p. It costs $1000 for a Dell 1600p monitor--and that's about as low as it gets.

1920 x 1200 23" IPS low lag A+ panel is about $400

2560x1440 27" IPS A- Panel (the quoted Auria) is about $400 (more dead pixels, not as good color/contrast)

2560x1440 27" IPS, low lag is ~ $650 for an A+ panel (HP)

2560x1600 IPS, high lag is about $1000+ for a 30" panel (as far as I know there are no low lag 30" panels)

with your r7970 you should be able to run 2560x1440 with pretty high settings. For me, if I'm going to spend that much for a monitor that will last me 5-10 years, I'm going for the 27" IPS A+ panel. It's really all a matter of personal preference and your budget.

I have one of these too and it is freakin' awesome with its "retina" display (same as 27" Apple and HP) for half or less than half the price. Made me retire my 1920 x 1200 24" Dell Ultrasharp! Plus buying from Microcenter I could return within 15 days if I had found a dead pixel.

Requires dual dvi for full 2560 x 1440 resolution, hdmi will only give u 1920.
But your 7970 has dual dvi

I'd prefer a 16:10 28" monitor too, but they just don't seem to make them anymore.

I'm very happy with my Dell U2713HM, but I'm not very good at games. I haven't personally noticed any discernible lag though. Only thing I can really say as a possible downside is that a single 7970 is NOT enough power to drive some games maxed out at 1440p.

at this size and resolution the aspect ratio isn't as noticeably wide as on something like a tablet. sure, i'd like a 2560x1600 screen, but 2560x1440 is still nearly double the vertical pixels of most trashy laptop screens (how does anyone get any work done on one of those where you have to scroll to see the next sentence?).

But your 7970 has dual dvi

got one of these over the summer and kept my 24" for portrait mode. So much real estate i couldn't go back. At some point down the road i'm tempted to get another two but i heard they sell them with an anti-glare coating now.

The HP has been a great monitor and I can run with very high settings in all current games with a 7970 Ghz. The biggest issue you will run into is that the monitor is horribly calibrated from the factory. Plan to spend another $150 for a calibrator as it makes a huge difference. I went with the Spyder Pro, but I'm sure you will get different opinions there as well.
