people are too stupid to wrestle or get wrestling even though its purest form of combat and requires more skill and training than anything else in the games...oh now I see why it was dropped in our short attention span sissified world. No one does it. Even colleges are dropping programs.
Anyone can herpderp 100m so they get it and its simple to follow point A to point B so it will never be dropped.

i think partly you hit on it. people don't understand it. There aren't many flashy moves, no knockouts and hard to tell what's really going on.

I am all for womens athletics. they have to be realistic though. Title 9 was a good concept but terrible execution. it was to give women more chances at sports.
The issue is that instead of giving women more teams they have had to cut men's sports. they didn't plan on that they wouldn't/couldn't get as many women's who wanted to compete in more sports.

They're just moving to more of what the average person can relate to. Bar sports, beach sports, women in scanty clothes. We vote with our watching habits. Oooh, darts, from 50 ft. Why, I'd sure watch that. Or not, might be a little too far, maybe not... Not a darts expert. Could be interesting.

It's outrageous to remove wrestling. There's no way an original Olympic sport should be dumped after all these years.
And yes, TV coverage is to be blamed. last Olympics I tried to watch discuss, weightlifting and some other traditional sports and had almost no luck finding them on TV. Same for wrestling. Wanna watch beach volleyball? No problems, it was everywhere.
I just don't get, or believe, the 'ratings' argument. If it ain't TV in the first place then there can't be any ratings. So, are the networks dictating the spots in the Olympics now?

former wrestler here. This is complete bullshit. All this does is discredit the Olympics as an event.
olympic medals are just becoming less and less valuable. I mean look at a sport like basketball. What matters more winning an nba title, or a gold medal?
