Wow, that "sport" is still in? I guess people maybe like watching it for a few seconds just so they can mentally mock the people doing it because it looks so silly, whereas it's hard to feel superior to people who can throw other people who weigh the same onto the ground violently.

people are too stupid to wrestle or get wrestling even though its purest form of combat and requires more skill and training than anything else in the games...oh now I see why it was dropped in our short attention span sissified world. No one does it. Even colleges are dropping programs.

Anyone can herpderp 100m so they get it and its simple to follow point A to point B so it will never be dropped.

i think partly you hit on it. people don't understand it. There aren't many flashy moves, no knockouts and hard to tell what's really going on.

And this starts a conversation about womens athletics in general. What is equal is not fair. Universities artificially inflating demand for a product women are generally less interested in then men.

What has happened to the sport of wrestling in this country since title 9 is a disgusting display of how politics ruin shit.

I am all for womens athletics. they have to be realistic though. Title 9 was a good concept but terrible execution. it was to give women more chances at sports.

The issue is that instead of giving women more teams they have had to cut men's sports. they didn't plan on that they wouldn't/couldn't get as many women's who wanted to compete in more sports.

They're just moving to more of what the average person can relate to. Bar sports, beach sports, women in scanty clothes. We vote with our watching habits. Oooh, darts, from 50 ft. Why, I'd sure watch that. Or not, might be a little too far, maybe not... Not a darts expert. Could be interesting.

I'll just stick to watching gay porn if I want to see men grabbing each others junk.

It's outrageous to remove wrestling. There's no way an original Olympic sport should be dumped after all these years.

And yes, TV coverage is to be blamed. last Olympics I tried to watch discuss, weightlifting and some other traditional sports and had almost no luck finding them on TV. Same for wrestling. Wanna watch beach volleyball? No problems, it was everywhere.

I just don't get, or believe, the 'ratings' argument. If it ain't TV in the first place then there can't be any ratings. So, are the networks dictating the spots in the Olympics now?

If they had won gold by hitting their opponents with chairs and offering commentary on their struggles this would not have happened.

former wrestler here. This is complete bullshit. All this does is discredit the Olympics as an event.

olympic medals are just becoming less and less valuable. I mean look at a sport like basketball. What matters more winning an nba title, or a gold medal?

wooo!

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...ogram/2369217/

Three months after it was surprisingly removed from the list of core Olympic sports, wrestling gets another shot. The International Olympic Committee's executive board shortlisted three sports Wednesday for inclusion beginning with the 2020 Summer Games.

Also competing for the single opening is baseball/softball and squash. A final decision will be made in September after a full membership vote

one step closer to getting back in

I agree it sucks for wrestling to be removed. Hope that doesn't last.

Definitely excited to see some Olympic rugby, though. Maybe we can get 15's back, eventually.

Swimming underwater is one of those things that is impressive to do, but maybe not so much to watch.
And if you think you're bored in front of the TV, imagine how the live spectators feel while staring at the surface of a pool.

I wish they would remove all the performance arts masquerading as sports. Ice dancing, ribbon twirling, etc, etc. Its sad what gets air time. I have to watch the internet feeds to see any real sports anymore.

Gymnastics is hugely popular though, along with its winter equivalent, figure skating. And as long as you're up for removing judged events (a valid position, really, given the number of judging scandals), then events such as diving, snowboarding, the non-timed aspects of mogul skiing, and many others would be removed.

If you're specifically referring to rhythmic gymnastics BUT NOT artistic gymnastics, well, I'm sorry you don't like one, but that's not a great reason to just get rid of it.

The ones I have a problem with are events like dressage (horse dancing) and all other equestrian events. Even though I realize that getting a horse to do all that stuff takes a lot of training and work, that doesn't mean it should be an Olympic event any more than motorsports, or sculpture-making, or coding. The Olympics should be about physical feats of humans, not of animals.

I wonder if you could program impartial computers to analyze a set number of criteria to replace judges in performances such as diving. I would have to think that they could be hugely more accurate in determining angle, smoothness of motion, etc, whatever you tell it to. Of course computers couldn't measure 'artistry' or abstracts, but that's kind of the point, isn't it? IOW, useless for events that have artistic aspects, such as Gymnastics floor routine, but great at very very minute measurements on aspects such as vaulting.

Any sport judged mostly on artistic merit doesn't have a place imho. Doubly so if it takes place to music and can be called a 'routine'. I know they are the most popular 'sports', but they just don't belong.

I thought the worst most arbitrary judging came from boxing.
