Default Best budget Bluray?

Just want basic bluray playback with component, composite and HDMI. Current set doesn't have HDMI, but will be upgraded soon. Current DVD player has died.

Thanks

TBH im not sure you can even get a BR player with Compoent outs anymore. I thought they removed them all because of copy protection BS - or they just dissabled 1080p over it

Anubis is correct.

The only way to get what you want is by lurking around on ebay and Craigslist and hope a decent older player becomes available. But you are presented with a potentially tough choice because many older players are dead slow. Or have firmware issues that OEMs have been slow to fix (especially now that the players are many years old). And that's assuming that the player even works because you'll be buying it used.

This sounds like a perfect opportunity to rationalize the purchase of a brand new 70 inch LCD panel.

composite and HDMI would be sufficient.

True enough, I've just been amazed at what a relative bargain the S590 has been.

Take into consideration that neither the S390 or S590 have built in storage so some BD titles may have problems playing. You can however add storage buy plugging in a USB stick into the open USB port on the player.

Is the S790 worth it?

The S790 is fine, but it kind of goes outside of the "budget player" category since it sells for about $250. If you want a budget player, I'd just go for a S390 or S590 and buy a cheap 2 or 4GB USB stick for like $10. Done. I'd lean toward the S590 though. The S390 is just oddly small to me.

If later on you want a better player, you can get an Oppo.

Correction: It looks like the S590 does have 1 GB of internal memory. It's the S390 that doesn't have internal memory.

Yeah, as Jack said, that goes outside of the budget category. If you go here, you can see a feature comparison between the various models around the middle of the page. I'm not sure that the 790's feature differences are worth the premium at this stage. Once 4K TVs are commonplace, those features would be useful but by the time that happens, there will be better players available and maybe even a higher-resolution BD standard.

I bought the S590 as a cheap BD player for our master bedroom and am considering taking it downstairs and swapping it with the Panasonic player in my entertainment center.

Good point and I don't think I even remembered to look at that when I bought the S590. We don't use it much in our bedroom so that's why I am strongly considering moving it downstairs to replace my Panasonic (DMP-BD65) as it is a superior unit.

I have the S790, if you have a Sony Visa, you can get one for $189 + shipping at sonyrewards.com until Sunday. mine has a high pitched whine noise if I just leave a disc in the drive spinning. This high pitched noise is very common with Sony player, I was gonna get anothe S790 r for my new plasma, but I might get a panasonic instead because of this noise.

what ps3 is the way to go? I'd sort of like a console now. The S790 I was also looking at prior to posting this.

i would suggest one of the current "super-slim" ps3s, since they run cooler & quieter than the older slim or fat ps3s.
They've been steadily removing stuff like ps2 backward compatibility, ports, and linux support for a while now though. So if you want any of that you have to go with an older used one.

link showing the different specs over the years
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlaySta...del_comparison

I don't think the US gets the 12GB flash version, so you're stuck with either 250GB or 500GB of storage.
The drives are user replaceable, so it doesn't matter too much what size you get. You might even want to replace the stock 5400rpm drive with a 7200rpm or SSD for snappiness (or even games that more or less stream textures in like RAGE).
Many of the games allow saving some content to the hard drive to reduce load times. I haven't filled up much of the 250gb drive (maybe 1/4th of it) I replaced in my fat ps3. I do most of my gaming on PC, but have maybe 20 or so PS3 games, mostly games that seem like a controller would help.

The ps4 might be released at the end of the year, if that matters any.
