Default Dips...how many?

As we know dips are a great workout exercise, they're the squats of the upper body. I'm a 5'6" 40yr old male that is in decent shape, - I do strength workouts for specific muscle areas as well as a crossfit workout at least once a week. (my cardio still sucks however lol). When it comes to dips, I do 3 sets of 15-20. I haven't tried to do a straight "to failure" amount yet. So I'm wondering is there a certain amount of dips that correspond to certain level of fitness?

Well, if you're doing 15-20, you're working more for your muscular endurance. If you're going for endurance, then the more you can get, the better your endurance "fitness." If you're going for pure strength, then the more weight you can add to your body weight (via dip belt, holding a dumbbell with feet) and complete 1-6 reps, the better your strength "fitness." It depends on what you want really.

Once I was able to do 15 easily, I started to add weight.

I usually do 4 sets of 8 with a 25 lb. weight attached with a dip belt. No real reason for these numbers except that it feels right.

27reps for me. 5'10, bw was about 98kg. My shoulder goes well past parallel.

I did 7reps with 30kg on Wednesday. I never do weighted dips regularly. Only when my mate does them. He is a dip monster. Does them weighted with 45kg for 10reps at 78kg!

How strict are your dips? Do you break parallel with your shoulders?

Dips are a great exercise, but you'll definitely want to add weight or move to a more challenging progression...Russian dips, ring dips, there's a lot of progressions that'll help you continue to get stronger.

The only dips I do are from muscle-ups so I usually only do about 5 a set.

Cool, I haven't started to add weight yet but I guess its time. As far as parallel, my shoulders are "at" parallel.

I miss doing dips but since I jacked up my shoulder in August last year I am stayed away. Ive only been back lifting for a month now and its getting better everyday but I fear dips might have caused it.
