Default Sony VP teases a big announcement related to PlayStation at E3 or ealier.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/16/s...playstation-4/

Please be PS4, please be PS4, please be PS4...

Rumor roundup -
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...postcount=6082

Quote:
PS4 "Orbis"
- AMD x86 3.2GHz APU Solution (Jaguar/Steamroller), 4 cores (2 core pairs), [Higher Clock than X720/Durango]
- Maybe AMD 8000 series GPU solution [Customised Solution Possibly utilising GPU + APU combo]
- 2-4GB GDDR5
- Launch Fall 2013/Early 2014

Explanation: PS4 has a higher clock, but less cores and is using an APU solution (CPU & GPU elements combined onto a single chip). The PS4 has less RAM but is using faster GDDR ram, so the overall performance should be a wash.

For more information, Jeff Rigby's rumour roundup.

Xbox 720 "Durango"
- AMD x86 Jaguar 1.6GHZ 8-Core [Targeting one core being dedicated for OS tasks]
- AMD 8000 series GPU
- ESRAM on the GPU (unknown amount)
- 8GB Ram DDR3, [1.5GB of RAM likely reserved for the operating system]
- Launch 2013

Link
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthre...=#post46199593
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...postcount=1546

Explanation: 720 has a lower clock, but more cores. 720 has more but SLOWER RAM. DDR3 RAM is usually good for things like multitasking etc....It is expected to be based on Windows 8 as well.

I find it very interesting that we're rumored to be seeing the next generation consoles hit shelves late this year (maybe mid-2014) and yet we still have absolutely zero announcements or even solid rumors (or leaked pics).

The 360 shipped 7 months after the first announcement. They could still manage this year. And if I remember right none of the "leaked" pictures of the 360 or PS3 were right.

Even better if there's a shorter delay between the announcement and the launch.

I've been out of the hardware game for a while...but wouldn't you take 2-4x RAM over faster RAM every time?

On a PC, yeah, but those have dedicated video RAM which is much faster than standard DDR. On a console with shared memory, maybe not. How much RAM you can read per frame matters, and that is a function of the bandwidth. I can't say which one will win out long term, but there are certainly pros and cons to both. I would guess the faster but smaller PS4 RAM would be better at smaller but more detailed environments, while the new Xbox would be better at vast levels. A bit like a repeat of the ps3/360 really, seeing how much large open world games suffered on the PS3 while more closed, more detailed games excelled on it (Rage, Skyrim/Killzone 3, Uncharted 3, etc).

Besides, it's possible that the 4GB will be enough for game engines for most of the next gen consoles lifetimes, making the 8GB mostly go unused apart from caching.

Another factor though is that a bit like the 360, the Nextbox supposedly has embedded eSRAM (faster than eDRAM), which complicates direct bandwidth comparisons as the most bandwidth hungry operations could be stored in that.

Thanks for the explanation! Wonder which I'll get this time. I've gotten playstations since ps1 (though I had an n64 also). Then nothing but ps2 and ps3. I'm starting to get excited like a little kid again.

I think it depends on the overall setup, but I'm not too fond on that rumor. Personally, I would use a split setup like the PS3, but not skimp on the memory. 2-4GB of DDR3 for the CPU and 2-3GB of GDDR5 for the GPU. Depending on cost and design, 4GB of GDDR5 may be a modest proposal depending on the GPU's memory controller setup. I'm a bit hesitant to consider that much necessary given the console will probably be stuck rendering at 1080p with modest settings. My GTX 680 has 2GB of GDDR5, and it's fine at 1080p with maxed out settings. That might not be the same with higher resolution textures or a larger render resolution (note: not upscale).

EDIT:

Consider the numbers on Tom's 7970 GHz review:

7970Ghz: 288 GB/s
7970: 264 GB/s
GTX 680: 192.3 GB/s

Then take a peek at DDR3's max transfer rate based on JEDEC numbers:
DDR3-1600: 12800 MB/s

Of course, that's only for a single channel.

I could see the 720 needing a decent amount of RAM if it's truly based around Windows 8. A custom console OS is much more efficient than a desktop OS.

Even the Wii U OS uses a whole gigabyte to itself, I think that's just the way things are moving. They want to have things like the web browser be able to open at any time including gameplay.

And being based around Windows 8 could just mean the kernel, Windows Phone 8 is "based around" the Windows 8 kernel but it's far lighter.

There's a rumour going around the usual sites that we could get our first glimpse of the PS4 on February 20th.

You said PS3, but I think it was a Freudian slip. Sony introducing a newer, slimmer PS3

Given the number of SKUs the PS3 has had over the years, I wouldn't be surprised.

PS4 and the Xbox 720 will both be announced at their own events well before E3. Won't likely be any hands on until E3 though.

Default WSJ says its sources confirm it's the PS4, will go on sale in 2013

The Wall Street Journal is saying its sources have confirmed to it that the PS4 will be announced at the Feb. 20 event. Citing "people who are familiar with the matter," the WSJ also reports the PS4 will be on sale later this year, not 2014 as some rumors have suggested.

Sony Corp. is planning to unveil its next-generation home videogame console during a February event, showing off a successor to its current PlayStation 3 system.

The Japanese electronics giant Thursday unveiled plans for a special PlayStation-themed event set for Feb. 20, teasing fans to "see the future" at the event. People familiar with the matter have said the new device will make its debut there, beating Microsoft Corp. to the punch in announcing its own next-generation game machine.

Sony's device will be released later this year, these people said, and will spar against Microsoft's own machine, which is also expected to be released by the holidays.

"We'll let Microsoft announce it first."

You sly dogs.

Just imagine the backlash if this is something silly like a Vita game announcement. Drumming it up like this, they pretty much need to announce something good.

I really hope it doesn't release this year. I already have so much stuff to buy. But I guess I usually wait anyways.

I'd like to think I won't jump that fast given how quickly the prices drop (relative to console life), but I'm a sucker for gadgets so it's hard to say. I don't like what I'm hearing about the controller though so we'll have to see.

Yeah, as dumb as this will sound to a lot of people, I want to hear about the controller before I decide which one to buy.
