Ouch!!! The tax increase sucks
just downloaded my first earnings statement of the year that has the payroll tax increase and all its pretty light. I am going to have to adjust some things because per month its a significant chunk of change.

Claim more exemptions. Idiots who get a big check in March think they just won the lottery...what they have done is give Uncle Sam an interest-free loan.

The rates just went back to what they were before the temporary cut.

For who? Borrow $1k from your local bank with a Visa or MC stamp on it.
It is better to owe $200 after filing then getting $X,XXX back, unless you just have no idea about money. Then it really is great. I have been there.

I always owe each year, not even worth mentioning, but adding the Alaska PFD kicks it up a bit to make me always think about not filing for it next year. Yeah, right!
I was kind of surprised to see the taxes kick in on our paycheck this past Friday 1/4/13 since it was for 2 weeks worth of work before the end of the year. At least my cost of living increase on my next paychecks should negate what the government takes for the rest of the year.

I get first pay of the year tonight so I'll find out how much of a chunk plus got hours cut in half but have to work weekends now and two days off during the week instead. This way they get Sat and Sunday covered without having to pay for it.
I told my wife I may as well work retail.
Good times.

Between the huge increase in health care costs (ours went up 35% plus they tacked on a big fee if your spouse has the option of getting insurance elsewhere), and the SS taxes going back to where they were (2%), it's a big hit to my paycheck. Enough to where my raise this year (assuming there is one) will not cover it, so essentially we'll earn less this year than we did last. That means adjustments to our budget, we'll be spending a lot less this year

Hey, at least your blaming the right people. I work very closely with Payroll in my company and they're getting employees calling wondering what the company did to their taxes. Idiots.

lower? lol, they didn't do anything other than put in the 39.6% rate from the old Clinton days.
With the sunsetting of the 2% reduction in Social Security check, the .9% Medicare Surcharge and the reduction of Medical Flex Spend contribution limit, everybody got a tax increase in one way or another.

This is what I did to recoup a bit. This past year I had claimed 0 due to a tax situation but that is clear for 2013. Phew. Claiming 2 now and it's about even.

The amount and types of income subject to the Medicare tax has also been changed, iirc.

Your assumption is that taxes should be based on the GDP of the country.
If you look at tax rates by income, you see that the US has the second highest corporate tax rates in the world, second only to Japan:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:In...By_Country.svg
US: 27% tax on a $15T GDP is $4.2T
Sweden: 49% tax on $384B is $188B

Yeah I guess you gotta do what you can. My stupid raise didn't help it actually made my check smaller than what it used to be without it because of the SS rate going back to normal. I claim one allowance. Also federal percentage of tax went up too thanks to my salary going up so that explains why I never saw a positive net take home from last year.

My health care cost went up as well as my taxes. I do get a lame ass 3% in July that will offset some of it.

I got the same 3% but I guess it depends if you also pay city wage taxes. I do regardless weather you work or live in the city. Wish I could afford to live closer to work.

Haven't noticed any increase for insurance yet.

I pay city wage tax for Philly even though I live outside out of the city limits, which kind of sucks. I'm trying to get an apartment closer to work (so I don't spend ~15 hours per week commuting) and it only gets higher for residents.
