Anyone have that aluminum Apple Remote?
...the one with the extra button?
(comes with the newer Apple Universal Dock and A4-based Apple TVs)
Apparently, Apple revised this remote at some point. I'm curious to find out which is the original and which is the revision.
I got one "refurbished" (but clearly unused) from an online retailer. Two more were included with Apple Universal Docks I purchased from Walmart.
The two from Walmart have a raised, bulged ring for navigational controls (up, down, left, right). It feels clunky. On my first remote, the navigation ring is flush with the curvature of the aluminum body. I much prefer that one. The depression for the center button makes it easy to keep your thumb in the correct position, so there's just no reason to have a raised ring.
(I'm aware that this thread is about something silly, insignificant, and pointless...I'm just curious.)

Wish I could find more with the flush ring that doesn't bulge out.
The first time I tried to use the revised one to compare, I tried to press up and it caused my thumb to roll and press something else (like the center button or something). The few times I've tried to use my remotes since then, the revised remotes just feel clunky and problematic. Well, I'm not letting go of my older-revision remote.

They must have changed the design really early on. All three of my ATV2 remotes have the raised button. I purchased mine around Feb '11. I also JB about another ten or so ATV2 for family and friends and all had the raised button.

Yeah. I'm guessing it was changed shortly after the aluminum remote came out. The aluminum remote was included with a Universal Dock bundle (white package). It was also sold separately and might have been included with some Macs. My first one was refurbished, purchased through Overstock.com, so that might be the only way to get the early version that I prefer.

Old one? Did it come with a computer or a dock? Did you buy the remote by itself? ...refurbished?

I took a look at the one I have, and it's the flushed one. I bought it separately at the Apple Store. IIRC, it was around June 2010.

I switched back to the old white remote. Much more comfortable to use.

I have the latest Apple TV and I don't even use my remote. I just use the Apple TV remote app on my iPad. Can't stand using the remote that came with the ATV.

All my remotes sit in drawers, except for the Harmony 700's I have set up in each room with a TV.
