I'm no expert on this, but such last second bidding is called "Sniping." And, there are software programs that can assist in doing this. Here's but one:

Are the prices for the Buy It Now increasing?
If so, the price may be being artificially manipulated.

omg just go to the apple store and buy a new one. Seriously though, how can something be rare if it is being replaced by anew model. Rare things dont usually get product refresh cycles.
